A 5am wake up has not been unusual here, but of course, today I was fast asleep when multiple alarms went off…just in case! This is the price we pay for having breakfast before we leave. It’s an excellent help yourself buffet here so we have decided it’s worth the get up.
Our taxi arrives promptly at 6.15am and whisks us to Kefvalik airport in ten minutes. Here we join the ‘speedy boarding’ queue, which may not be quite as speedy since the desk is unmanned. Maybe it doesn’t need to open as early because they are going to be speedy? Anyway the other queue is horrendous so it can’t be any worse.
Our check in has open ended and it’s all quite quick. Though anyone with a soft sided bag has to walk back round to the airport entrance for the oversize bag drop. Judging by the luggage on display, that means most people are going to be sent there today!
Security is also quick, although my metal hip has set the alarms off as usual so I get the once over that I’ve become accustomed to.
Our flight is on time so all going swimmingly
so far.
Some points on the airport:
Large signs actively discourage buying bottles water and fountains to fill your own with pure Icelandic water are available.
They don’t have trolleys to push your hand luggage around - maybe to encourage you to put it all in the hold? We would have done if we thought we had enough weight allowance left. As it turns out we could have put another 7kg in, but there’s no way way of knowing till you get to the scales! I’m guessing I must have bought 7kg worth of chocolate then? Our hand luggage is also decidedly lighter than when we came!
They do have large pushchairs for kids - much easier for parents. It’s a long walk to the D set of gates. Tick.
Don’t be fooled by the relative small size of the terminal building. They have you walking round in circles and once you’ve looped the loop once they send you downstairs to loop the loop again…always through duty free shops of course.
They have very trendy looking designer wooden benches to sit on which are hard as hell.
The walls have literary
quotes to improve your education and relieve the boredom.
Some points on packing:
Do bring lots of thermals, hats, gloves, scarves, waterproof jacket and trousers, hiking boots, good shoes, swimming gear and lots of chocolate.
Also bring high factor sunscreen and sun hats - it’s very easy to burn here!
Do not bring, summer trousers or sandals. Utterly pointless.
Also no point bringing money - everything is paid by card - even the toilets!
It’s a pleasant three hour flight back to the uk. We see a bit or Iceland before rising above the cloud then, as we approach the UK, clear skies and nice views of Scotland, the Lake District and parched fields in the Midlands.
We have landed at Luton, just before they close the runway declaring it heat damaged! Long wait for our hold bag, but our friend Michael is waiting to ferry us back to our car. Now just a long drive back in the baking heat, thank goodness we have air con. Talk about a complete turn around in temperatures!
Oh, and finally, did I mention our Good Driving Certificate? That will be
Ian plus the one day that I was allowed to drive! No excuse for getting a van of our own now!
