Chillin at the Blue Lagoon
Dear Friends,

We have arrived safely in Iceland and are trying to get into the groove of traveling together as a family and adjusting to life in a new country. As you can imagine, our final preparations to leave for three months and the emotional pressures of such a big trip hit us hard--especially after only a few hours of sleep on the plane and the four-hour time change. Thankfully, our first stop was to visit the world-famous geothermal hot springs called the Blue Lagoon just as soon as we got off the plane. As you can see from the photo, it is the most surreal blue water at just the perfect temperture to soak the day away with caves, waterfalls, and silica 'mud' to treat your skin.

The weather has been windy, rainy, and overcast (disappointing), but has not prevented us from doing any of the things that we had hoped to do and see. The stark beauty of Iceland is truly amazing with breath-taking vistas, rivers, mountains, and glaciers. The natural beauty of this place is indescribable. There are rocks everywhere, which the locals have learned to incorporate into building foundations, walls, and sculpture. There are tens

of 1000s of acres of lava fields, snow-capped mountains, sheep (lots of babies!), and horses. We have probably driven equally on paved roads and single-lane dirt roads (often with many pot holes). Fabulous B&Bs - one in Reykjavik, one on a huge working farm inland, and today´s on another working farm on the northern coast of the Snaefelnes Pennisula overlooking the Atlantic ocean with rain and howling winds. Best hike was in Thingvellier National Park through tectonic plate rift to a waterfall. Then to Geyser and Gulfoss waterfall. Everyone enjoying hot pots (hot tubs). First settlor was in 830. What the country saves by not putting up guardrails and safety fences at steep overlooks, it makes up for with large, frequent, and thorough road signs, including for each family farm. Despite Kate´s prediction that her first cry (mostly of relief!) would be on the airplane, it actually didn´t happen until today, at the modern church you see below, when we walked in on a local woman singing opera to an audience of 4 plus her husband. We were invited in to listen and her voice was absolutely incredible. She sang a song in English in our honor. So, the tears

came! Will explore one of the country´s four national parks tomorrow (although we read that a 5th was voted on today - it will be 15% of the country!), then drive south. Fly to London on Monday. Talk about culture shock...

Love, K4

Lovin' Iceland
So glad you are loving Iceland. It is such a unique place. Did you miss the earthquake? Thingvellir was where they held their first democratic congress. And the drowning pool- it was only for women! The double standard was alive and well even back then. Keep the blogs comin'. Love, Carolyn
