24-08-08 Valley of the Beatiful Women and terential rain

We spent another day in Zakopane doing very little, just enjoying a bit of a holiday, and left for Hungary early Saturday morning. We decided to drive through Slovakia and continue on to Hungary. The trip through Slovakia was some of the best scenery on the trip, mountainous, and river valleys, and huge forests. I’ve come to the conclusion that the Slovakians are some of the worst drivers in Europe, this however has a lot to do with their road laws. The urban speed limit is 60 kph, and they allow overtaking in urban areas, what usually happens is people overtake you at 90kph in the towns with pedestrian, cyclists, horses sharing the road and then only sit on 100kph when they are on the open road, I’m really struggling to get my head around this, as in CZ and Poland people drive to the limit in the towns and open limit on the open road, anyway - on to Hungary..

First stop in Hungary - Valley of the beautiful women, this is a line of about 25 wine cellars on the edge of a town called Eger. Local legend

notes that the town held off an invasion by drinking a lot of the local red for courage, it stained their beards, and the invading force- the Turks thought the locals had been drinking bulls blood, and ran back home. Not sure what this has to do with the current day name of the valley but the wine still seems to have a huge influence on the locals, they have BBQ fires set up in the middle of the street, cook food and drink the local wine which is excellent and costs about £1 per litre. We left at about 11 last night there were crowds of old and young, singing, dancing and yelping. The town of Eger is a really nice looking town as well, so all in all a good place to stop. I am kind of surprised not to see busses full of backpackers in this place, I am sure it will come.

We are currently camped on the edge of the Valley of the beautiful women, unfortunately there was a heavy thunder storm, really heavy, rain was rebounding off the ground and back up under the outer tent, so we got a little wet, for

a few pounds we have got hold off a caravan for tonight to let things dry out a little while we head off wine tasting again “Bulls Blood” is the favourite so far….. We couldn’t find a laundry anywhere in town so left our wet clothes to be dried in Tesco - they are everywhere! Plan is to head off to Maramures in Romania tomorrow then down to look for Vlad in Transylvania….

Where's the beer?
This is all very interesting Mr B, lots of interesting details and piccies, but what we really want to know about is the local brew. Maybe we could have a couple of entries dedicated to beer, or would you rather save the details for the Bow Bar over a pint and a steak pie?

Eastern Beer
Andrew, Good question.... Plenty of testing beer as well. Though less beer as we moved away from CZ - Some nice dark beers. I think they have the best beer in Europe - maybe except for the Germans..... Looking forward to catching up in the bow bar on return - should be back mid Sep. Hope all is well with you, and you have started up the brewing again in the new garage. Cheers Scott
