You would need to decide whether you want to be in Budapest when it is chock a block with tourists and the prices are high for hotel accommodations and other places of interest. This would be during the summer months which would extend through June, July and August. Though it is crowded and prices are higher, tourists would still come over as they would like the Sun bearing down on them in the high 70s Fahrenheit. It is an obsession to be in the Sun for some and they would not miss it even if they have to pay a few dollars more for the experience.
On the contrary if you are a more practical and discerning individual choosing to be in Budapest during the months of March, April and May would be the most prudent choice to make. If you have commitments back home during these months and are unable to make the journey, then you could choose the months of September, October and November. These two periods in the Budapest calendar would give you the choice of accommodation which would be affordable whilst having the chance to select from a wider choice of rooms.
Everything that is
interesting to be seen in Budapest would remain so that it would not be an issue that you would miss any of the sights. It is just that you would miss the blazing sun bearing down on you and also save some money in the pocket to do more than what you would be able to have done if you came during the height of the tourist season.
Hence it would be prudent to choose what we would call the lean or the months where the temperature would be in the low 50s through to the low 70s Fahrenheit. The weather would be good and bearable and the crowds would be gone or still trying to make their way when the Sun is at its annoying high.
The waters of the river Danube would still be flowing so you are unlikely to miss your cruise with the restaurants and the Parliament of Budapest as glorious as ever. Nothing changes and that would be the good news if you plan to visit Budapest during the lean months or the off season as some would like to call it.
The only things that you would miss would be the
frequency of some of the festivities generally attributed to the high season but still there would be the bike rides, and the tuk tuk to see the city in your own cool time. Most or all of the attractions like the museums, theaters, art galleries and the eight bridges would still be open for you.
Winter in Budapest
It may not be a very conducive time to be visiting Budapest during winter but the snow has its own beauty and you could be assured that the river Danube would not freeze. The river has not frozen for the last 70 years and it is very unlikely it would happen when you plan to be there. The river Danube is not only the center of attraction in Budapest it is the lifeline to this picturesque city.
The river Danube gives a spectacular ambience to the city of Budapest during winter as it would do during summer too. If summer brought a vibrant and spectacular flamboyance the river exudes a serene and calmness during the winter. It is along with the snow that falls would the beauty come which only your eyes could behold and that is if you happen to be in Budapest.
The temperature during winter could drop to minus 4 Fahrenheit but the resilience of the city is such that life would go on unabated to take it all in its stride. The number of tourists would drop drastically because they would not know what they are missing. Winter in Budapest could be spectacular to say the least, it would be picture book perfect and that is if you want to see the positive side of life. The snow would bring forth a new kind of enthusiasm and it is definitely not going to dampen the spirits of those who would dare to come along and have fun and frolic.
The most incredible spectacle is the freezing of the City Park’s boating lake which turns out to be Europe’s largest ice skating rink. The surrounding buildings of an era gone by, would add to the spectacle of hundreds of revelers skating their blues away on the ice rink. This has attracted many who would just love to skate all day and enjoy themselves with unlimited pleasure.
The ballets would be there to entertain you and this is one time during the year, the winter months that most of the ballets would open up for the public. The light show at the Basilica during winter is another one of those fantastic happenings during winter. The laser show on the façade of the St. Stephen’s Basilica aided by superlative animation and cartoons and many more would await the discerning visitor.
The laser show has moved into a new dimension with 3D glasses being offered which would bring the animations to virtually leap off the Basilica façade to add to the excitement. If this would not excite those who would come during winter they would not be disappointed as there are more activities lined up which would keep those who dared to come to the city charged and completely entertained.
It may be freezing outside but that would not deter the adventurous to slip into the thermal spa at either Gellert or Szecheyi the two most popular destinations for a warm rejuvenating dip in the water. The warm waters would do a world of good to your aching bodies and bring the blood flow back again. It is an experience that would be remembered for a very long time. There are more during winter in Budapest and it is as enjoyable as it is during summer and you could always opt for the most enjoyable
Budapest Dinner Cruise.
