Our day at Athens’ Acropolis.

The Acropolis towers above the city on its hill and consists of the Propylaia the monumental entrance, the small Temple of Athena Nike, the Parthenon the largest Doric temple completed in Greece and the Erechtheion with its famous maiden Caryatids. They were all built of Pentelic marble in the 400s BC. At present the there is an enormous amount of restoration work being carried out.

Jenny drove us into Athens and with her local knowledge was able to park within easy walking distance of the Acropolis. Our visit started in the museum containing the surviving treasures of the site. Then it was the climb up the hill to wander amongst the monuments which despite the amount of scaffolding were awe inspiring. The location gives superb views of the city which completely surrounds the site.

To round off the day we strolled through the Ancient Agora, rested our weary feet over a beer, visited Hadrian’s library and wandered along the pedestrianised streets of the old town.
