If you’re looking to travel to Greece, whether you’re visiting the mainland or hopping around famous Greek islands such as Kos, Rhodes, and Santorini, there are many tips and tricks which will help you to make the most of your trip. Here we provide you with our advice for travelling around this fascinating ancient country in style and within budget!
Choose Local Establishments
Although many international holiday companies can set you up on all-inclusive getaways in Greek resorts, very little of your money actually stays within Greece and helps the local people this way. As you probably know, Greece has had its fair share of economic turmoil in the past few years, so try to stay in local hotels and eat at the local restaurants as much as possible. This way, your money helps to stimulate the local Greek economy, rather than that of a multinational corporation. The economic situation has also led to many local business owners (such as hoteliers and restaurateurs) lowering their prices to attract customers, so it’s a win-win situation! Plus, who wouldn’t want to try some locally-prepared Greek food?
Visit the Mainland too
The cliché image of Greece, at least as a travel destination, is often associated with romantic whitewashed islands in the middle of the Mediterranean. However, this does not mean that you should not visit the mainland too! The mainland features some of Greece’s most enticing destinations, such as the imposing Pindos mountains, the golden beaches of Peloponnese, and the ancient ruins of Athens. If you’re looking for interesting history and archaeology on your trip, you’ll find it in mainland Greece. There is a very cheap national rail service which allows you to travel between cities in the mainland rather easily, especially if you’re looking to visit a few different key destinations while you’re there.
Be Prepared to Eat Late
As is the case in many Meditarrean regions, the Greeks like to eat their dinner later than most of us are used to. It is not uncommon for the Greeks to dine as late as 10pm, so don’t be surprised if you find that restaurants are open later than you would expect. Also, as is the case with many places when visting as a tourist, keep away from any obvious tourist traps and keep an eye on where all the locals are dining – it’s probably the place with the best food. If you’re going to drink alcohol, try the local bottled wine (it is cheaper than bottles) and don’t be conned into buying bottled water – in most cases, the tap water is drinkable in Greece, although do check for the specific region you’re visiting.
Air Tickets to Greece
If you’re looking for air tickets to Greece, you have multiple carriers and airports to choose from. Generally speaking, all the well-visited islands have their own small airports which you can directly fly to. For example, Rhodes, Mykonos, and Kos all have their own international airports, with mainland airports including Athens International and Thessaloniki Airport, among others. Lots of popular air carriers fly to various parts of Greece on a wide range of budgets. Common airlines flying to Greece include KLM, Eurowings, Etihad Airways, Ryanair, Jet2, Easyjet, and much more. There are airlines to suit everyone’s budget and money. If you’re coming from somewhere within Europe, you might be fortunate enough to acquire direct flight
air tickets to Greece. However, visitors from further abroad, such as the US, will often have to change at major European airports such as London Heathrow or Zurich International. Most Greek airports are quite small, especially those situated on the islands, so be prepared for fairly basic amenities once you arrive.
Consider Island Hopping
Why stick to one Greek island when there’s so many to peruse? There are plenty of ferry services available which allow you to hop between nearby islands and get a flavour for each different gem in the mediattarenan. In the summer months, it’s pretty easy to hop between the Ionian islands or the Cyclades with ease. If you do decide to island hop, just make sure you leave yourself enough time to make your flight home – ferries can occasionally be cancelled, so don’t risk getting stranded.
We hope you enjoyed this tips for travelling around Greece. Opa!
