So today we worke up at 6:45 am, to have a little day trip to the Island of Symi we had to be at the Port at 9am leaving the hotel by 8:30. This is what Symi is about. Its an Island of a population of 2606 and just a day trip away from Rhodes, its a rocky and very picturesque island. Ship building and sponge diving are the main economies of the Island. Sponge diving started in the Ottoman times.
Whilte on our way to Symi I had a radical amazement moment. It was when I was looking out to the water and it was clear, turquoise and this deep blue nothing like I have ever seen before. It was unbelievable. We made two stops in Symi, the first one was to Moni Taxiarnou Mihail Panormiti which is a large Monastery complex which was built in the 5th or 6th century. (This is one of the reasons why you could not take pictures inside) It had detailed carved wood, fresoes and a huge icon of St Michael. St. Michael is the patron st of Symi, he supposedly the protector for sailors.
The second place we went was the
Gialos which is the port for Symi. There are tons of neoclassical mansions along the hillside in the medley of colors and has a population of 2200. Some of my pictures I cant believe I was taking. It was just breath taking. Rhodes is apart of the dodescaies region of Greece along the western coast of Turkey and the Aegean Sea. 18 Islands in teh area and was under Italian rule until 1947 they say Rhodes grows on you but honestly I was in love when I landed and saw the culture, sceanery and history.
On the boat every time we would stop there was a big clock saying departure time when we got to the port at 1pm it sayed departure 3:50. I knew I was not being left on Symi because there is no way back other than our boat. I would be on board by 3;45 the latest that being said we don't leave dock until 4:10 by the time everyone boarded and made sure that everyone was on board... or we thought we did. As we are out of dock and the engine is reeving up we hear this family screaming stop stop!!! They missed
the boat, 20 minutes late would definitely do that to you. There was no turning back in the captains ees they were just SOL (shit out of luck). If that was me I would be freaking out, yet again that would ever be me ends up to be just a story to tell
The boat ride from Symi to Rhodes was 2 hours on the way back without stopping. It was something different we which we enjoyed thoroughly. We got into town and went to Blue Lagoon from happy hour. This is where we went last night for live music and when Tx danced on the table since we had drink vouchers still. We walked in and there was three beautiful Macaw parrots we got our drive and then a fish bowl it was amazing. While we were drinking our waitress asks us where we are from and if we want the parrot on our shoulder of course we said yes and the next thing Tx said was they are like men they just shit eat and say stupid things I almost spit my drik out. Tonight is low key night because we are going to Lindos tomorrow morning.
More pictureisk pictures and I can not wait.
Bed early... lila
