The nymph Symi mated with Poseidon, the god of the seas and gave birth to Hthonios who became the first leader of the island. Glayos was the first inhabitant, good swimmer and sailor that tought his habilities to the every one. The Island sent 3 ships to the Trojan war in Homer's "Iliad". In 1309 was conquered by the knights of St. John followed by a period of prosperity where shipping, sponge diving and boat building flourish. Symi was conquered by the Turks in 1522 but had privileges like freedom of religious expression and speech. In 1912 was occupied by Italy, In 1944 the English took over and the region was bombarded and destroyed. In 1945 they surrender to the Germans and 1948 became Greek as it is today. The Island is rich in music festivals and craft. At night there are live performances of different arts: music, theater, dance, cinema...
