Ahhhhh Santorini! This island quickly became ONE of our favourite places in the world. Actually, we were sold from the second we saw it as we approached it by ferry. The soaring cliffs with the hotels and towns perched along the top. It was beautiful.
From the second we saw our hotel room we didn't want to leave, and automatically the Greeks that we encountered, in our hotel, restaurants, mini markets, were much, much friendlier than those we had met in Athens and Mykonos.
Our hotel room was in a villa built right into the cliffs you see pics of, and our room was at the top of the hotel (we're talking 3 storeys) on it's own complete floor! We had so much privacy and space to lay out our deck chairs and laze about it was awesome! It was the best room in the hotel so we were VIP for the week, ahhh bliss!
We spent many an hour on our deck! The rest of the time we would wander along the clifftop paths, with their sensational views, down to Firostefani and Fira and wander the cobbled paths around the towns. The weather was awesome our entire
stay. We soon found out the charming few restaurants in Firostefani are usually booked out at night so we got an Italian restaurant to make us a pizza for takeaway and took it back to our deck with a few drinks. The view from there is so sensational we decided this was perfect and we actually didn't need to go back to a restaurant at all. We have better to equal views than all the hotels from our very own deck!
On the third day on Santorini we hired a Quadbike to venture round the island. We drove out to Perissa Beach with it's black sand and then round to Red Beach with it's red rocks. Our quadbike in itself was a pretty funny experience. Obviously, there are lots of hills on Santorini and our little quadbike struggled up them all! It would just get slower and slower as it wound it's way up, sometimes with one of us (Martin usually made Kristi) having to get off and walk up while Martin took it the rest of the way to the top. It was so putsy! Other quadbikes were zooming past us, even loaded with 2 BIG fat tourists,
we just couldn't stop laughing, there was something seriously wrong with it but once you're away from town what are you going to do? That evening we drove round winding cliff top roads to the most traditional village on Santorini, Oia, to see the sun set. The drive was fantastic as the sun was beginning to set over the water and most of the time we were right on the edge of sheer cliffs so the views were breathtaking. The village of Oia is very beautiful, quaint streets and buildings, it was really cool. We also soon realised that it is a VERY popular place to come to see the sunset, we finally wove our way to a point to see the famous sunset spot and it was crowded with people taking photos so we took 1 or 2 over their heads and went back to explore Oia some more.
We suddenly realised how soon Rome and Edinburgh are after our arrival back into London so we spent the next afternoon trying to book accommodation.... argh! We are going to see the All Blacks game in Edinburgh (thanks to Dad scoring us some free, gold category seats at the
game!) and it took us a loooooooooooooong time on the net to find somewhere to stay, the whole city was booked out! jeepers! finally found a hostel that had had a cancellation of 2 beds in one of it's 4 bed dorms so jumped on them!
The next day we dropped off our putsy quad bike and WERE wandering back to the hotel when we ended up doing a spot of shopping (ok a couple of hours worth!) and doing the postcard thing. That done it was another day basking on our deck, then ordering in pizzas and drinks for dinner on our deck. That pretty much set a ritual for the next few days...
The whole 6 days on Santorini flew pretty fast and were pretty damn perfect, Santorini is sensational and we'd recommend it to anyone! But suddenly it was time to return to London...
We've been away from London for six weeks, and we haven't seen a SINGLE drop of rain in that entire time! Nor have we even worn a jumper once! But now it's back to London for 13 days before our next trip out. Let's hope we can find some work
to up the bank balances a bit! ;-)
