Our Digs
That's our bedroom window above the pink flowers Good Afternoon from Kiotari,
We picked up our rental car outside the main entrance in Rodos and, after some fierce negotiations, managed to pay the price we were originally told! We like this car better, the gear shift is better placed…here’s hoping it will make for better shifting!!! Headed south from Rodos Old Town (from now on I’ll call it just Rodos, as the people here do) and immediately felt better for getting out of town! Drove for about 30 km’s and stopped for lunch in a little town that offered all sorts of British “fry-ups” on the menus.
We had decided we were just going to wing it in regards to finding our next accommodation… turned off the road toward the water on a whim and stopped at the first place we saw by the water. After checking out the place we decided it was just right for a few days of R&R, a funny concept when you are on holidays. The owner, Anna, asked where we were from and when we told her Canada, her face lit up and she told us she had lived in Montreal (Laval) for 20 years, moving there when she
Here for a good time
I have been hauling this t-shirt from the Trooper concert this summer around with me...waiting for the perfect time to put it on! was 7. She met her husband Bill in Canada, tho he too is from here and had moved to Montreal.
So far we have stayed in accommodations owned by a Dutchman with a Greek wife, a Kiwi with a Greek wife, a Dutchwoman with an Italian husband, and so, finally, we are staying with Greek people, but ones who have lived in Canada.
Anyway…feeling like we have died and gone to heaven, we settled into this quiet, roomy studio. Full cooking facilities, for which I am grateful as eating out all the time does wear a little thin, and best of all a lovely terrace overlooking the sea which is across the road. I asked Anna about a Laundromat as we are pretty well out of clean clothes. She said to do it here and I thought she meant I could use her washing machine, and I suggested waiting till Mon since it was a weekend. She said, I do tomorrow, time to dry. I said are you sure? And she replied with “of course” (say it with a Greek accent) accompanied with this kind of single shoulder shrug and slight flip of the head…this has
become a very familiar gesture to us.
Just as well we are right at the beach because we have little left to wear til laundry day tomorrow but our bathing costumes. We hit the water and it felt great to float around a little. Gord trotted off to find us some bread and cheese for dinner…came back with slices (size and shape of a bologna slice) of this funny round bacon kind of stuff (the man in front of him at the butcher ordered it, Gord just said “same”), and also some cheese we haven’t tried yet…not my cup of tea tho, has that rotten feet kind of odour!!! Lovely dinner on the terrace with some excellent white wine produced here on the Island. Gord had a wee tipple of the cognac he bought for himself…the man is really getting quite adventurous! He also bought himself a mask and snorkel to try out tomorrow.
People moved in next door and sadly speak a language that apparently can’t be spoken softly! Of course what really annoys me is knowing they can understand us speaking in English and I can’t understand their language! hahaha
Sat on
the front porch of the Anna’s shop downstairs with her for a while then it was off to bed early, the sound of the sea just close enough to lull us to sleep.
Day 12 After a modified bacon and egg breakfast with toast made in the frying pan, we put on what is now our only clean clothing, our bathing suits. I have never been to the Caribbean, but I think it’s like that…out of the jammies into the bathing costume! Had a great swim myself and Gord snorkeled for about an hour and a half…I watched him from the terrace chasing fish. I went down to start the laundry and Anna told me she would be doing it.
We drove to a little town called Lahania and had lunch in a place said was in a small village square complete with water and ducks. Very small square, a bit of a tap fountain and no ducks! I ordered the dolmades which were called “vine leaves stuffed with rice” on the menu. Mama delivered me what looked like cabbage rolls with cheese melted (it was a lemon egg sauce…deli!) on them, and our Greek Salad (yes,
in his element
Looks shallow, but it's actually about 20 feet deep. The water is so clear. as a matter of fact, we do eat it everyday) was set on a bed of coleslaw. Anna told me later that this time of year dolmades are often made with cabbage leaves.
Next stop was Asklipieo, Anna’s home town. We first visited a folk museum housed in a traditional home of this area which is a single story low kind of house. Great display but no signs telling us what some of the contraptions were but Anna helped us out with what was what when we got back. Next was the tiny but very beautiful Church of Kimisis, with beautiful Byzantine painting on the ceiling, something we haven’t seen yet. No photo’s allowed! We wound our way up to the Castle (oh alright…we took a few wrong roads…), passing a most amazingly situated soccer field. I’ll let the pics tell that story…a good time was had by all and we watched a bit of the soccer game on the way down.
Laundry won’t be finished until tomorrow, now a little handwashing is in order I’m afraid. Anna said maybe she would iron our clothes…I told her they would die of shock, wouldn’t know what hit ‘em!
Lahania
Yup, that's it....the villiage square Plantero Tavern The moon is almost full….good night B&G
