We have updated this blog so read it
Flying out of Paris was an experience all to itself. Firstly trying to find the Peugeot drop of point was a mission after about half an hour exploring Charles de Gore we luckily stumbled upon it. Ironically it was the parking lot full of Peugeot's. Go figure. Luckily the speed camera fine had not been issued yet so we might get of that one !!!
Arriving into Athens was quite upsetting, knowing that the last part of our journey was about to begin and only having two months island hopping around the Greek islands ahead of us.
The city of Athens is ugly apart from the ancient ruins. Tourist souvenir shops line every alleyway. People constantly approaching you trying to sell you well something. Pirated DVDs, sunglasses or Cd's and of course the designer hand bags. Exploring the Acropolis was amazing knowing that in the 5th century BC the surrounding area was a thriving city. Constructed with style that has lasted the test of time. Though most monuments have been pulled down and new replica's put in their place. Though a air of mystery still surrounds the area.
Their is only so much exploring and looking at ancient ruins in the heat that Mel could handle. Well it was both of us really.
So a decision was made.
The Cyclades where the obvious choice due to their location so we took the first fairy we could. Another story all to itself but we ended up travelling first class. Serifos was our first port of call. We have learned now finding accommodation during peek season can be quite difficult but luckily we manged to find a beautiful apartment over looking the main bay. Our days consisted of discovering white stoned villages atop of small mountains and secluded bays with warm light blue water great for swimming in.
Sifnos is another small island with droves of tourist coming of every ship. However we again where lucky with our accommodation finding a nice hotel room with a balcony over looking the sandy bay with restaurants below.
We decided to hire a motorbike and have a ride around the island. Well worth it apart from Melissa screaming as she hang on for dear life. We travelled from bay to bay swimming, reading & exploring.
A day we will remember
for a while.
We where only able to stay a few nights in Sifnos as the whole island had been booked out. So we took the morning fast fairy to Milos hopping for better luck. After spending an hour searching the streets with our excessively heavy back packs for any scrap of accommodation available. I decided to leave Melissa in a restaurant and carry on the quest. Sadly I returned 40 minutes later with nothing. Meanwhile Melissa however had an old man approach her asking if she need any accommodation. She gladly took him up on his offer. Reluctantly we both loaded our bags into his decrepit car and prayed he was not going to kill us. After a quick drive through the narrow white lanes we arrived. I know what you are thinking we had another great place to stay. Well you are wrong. Our accommodation for the next three nights ended up being a glorified CAVE!!! Luckily for us they had a problem with the sewer so a not so pleasant stench lingering in the air. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture so you will have to take our word for it.
With the money
Serifos
on top of a hill we saved living like cavemen we where able to take a day drip around the island on a large boat. Milos is the most extraordinary island I have ever seen. Due to its volcanic origins it is immensely rich in minerals creating rock formations and colours you have to see to believe. Our photos don't do it justise.
Accommodation in Greece for the month August is expensive a room that normal cost 30 euro jumps right up to 80 - 130 absolute madness. Mel came up with the idea we head to Crete for two weeks a miss out on the large crowds and over price accommodation. Gladly I agreed.
We arived in the port of Agios Nicolas and spent 3 days settling in, more drinking, sunbathing and of course going out for meals, yes life is still pritty hard. We mannaged to find a place that did realy cheep car reatanls so decied to take them up on their offer and hired a car for two weeks. Once the car was deliverd the next morning we found out why it was so cheep. The car was well intresting to drive put it that way.
We are
now about to drive back to Agios Nickolas to take a ferry to Santorina. Traveling around the island was fantastic exploring more achent old palaces, swimming in crystly blue alsmost too warm sea water and staying in some very nice affordable accomodation with pools and breakfast all for $30.00. The north side of the island is amied at the UK pakage tourist market. Mel and I found this most amusing almost to the point of laugh out loud as we incounted intresting chacters. The southern side of the island is alot quiter with little tourist activerty and amazing beaches. I must say we have been very lucky with the weather arpart from France on our trip. In greece we have not even seen a cloud.
This will proberly be our last travel blog as it seems to be such a pain in the A$$$ to do. So for the last few weeks we are headed back towards Athens Island hopping along the way.
We both are realy looking forward to come home and catching up with our freinds and family. It has been a great trip as you can see. So much of it has not been put down in
this travel blog so when you see us we might have a few stories to tell.
See you all soon
Tim and Mel
