We left sad to leave the rolling hills and sadder to say goodbye to the engaging people we had met in Serbıa but also excited to be heading towards the sea, which we both hadn't seen in well over a year. On the bus leaving Plananıcıa we met Soran, we enjoyed sharing stories and he recently sent us an inspiring poem describing our meeting.
We arrived in Nisa few hours later and started investigating how we would get to Greece. There were two trains leaving early the next morning. One to Skopje, Macedonıa and the other to Sofıa, Bulgarıa but still we had no idea if we could easily get to Greece from either of those places. Erıc had a gut feeling that Sofıa would be our best bet so at 2am we boarded a very run down train to Bulgarıa. It was a 6 hour train ride and we were squished into a small compartment with four very large but very entertaining boys from Nıche university, they were making their way slowly to Istanbul for a Basketball tournament. They kindly shared their home made raıkı with us, to help pass the time, and in what felt like no time
at all we had arrived in Sofıa. No sooner had we got off the train were people asking us where we needed to go. We said Thesselonıkı expecting to be told it was impossible as we had read on the internet but a man quickly found us an agency and within 20 minutes of leaving the train we were sitting on a bus straight to Thesselonıkı! ( up until recently there has been plenty of bus and train connections to and from Greece but due to the financial situation there a now very few)
In Thesselonıkı we were working in a super chilled hostel. Erıc´s job was working in the garden and I was helping in the cafe. The staff and travelers were all great and we were able to meet lots of people to hang out with. As the last few weeks we had spent a lot of time traveling we decided that we were not going to play tourist in Greece and have a week of relaxing. We started work at about 6pm each evening and instead of sightseeing we spent the days drinking coffee and cycling around the waterfront.
After four days of relaxed work
we were told we had three days off so we decided to make a trip out to Torini, Halkıdıkı. The second of the three legs. We were given a tent and some food and recommended a quiet nudist beach where we could escape for the weekend. To find the beach we had to do a bit of bushwhacking but eventually found a beautiful strip of white sand with a dazzling turquoise bay. It was perfect and we were suprised there was only one other guy camping there. He informed us that it was the best time to be there and a month later the beach would be packed and the police would be out hunting campers.
We received a text from Sımon, who was expecting to meet us in Thesselonıkı and convinced him to make the trip out as well. The three of us spent the next couple of days swimming, exploring and reflecting on the last months. On the last night I thankfully burnt my toe and whilst cooling my toe in the sea discovered Bioluminescent phytoplankton in the water which we splashed about in. The last day Erıc and Sımon helped a fisherman clean his fish net
and in return we were given some fish to put on the fire for lunch.
In the evening we took the bus back to Thesselonıkı and the next day said goodbye to everyone at the hostel and sadly also to Sımon who would now be heading in the opposite direction, traveling slowly back to France.
Next Istanbul!
