Greetings from Greece! The capital city Athens has hosted us for the last two and a half days and tomorrow morning we are off to the beautiful island of Santorini. Literally cannot wait!
On our last day in Amsterdam, Ed and I spent the morning browsing around the central shopping district, amazed at the number of shoes stores here. They are Sex and the City 2 mad. Most of the shops are advertising ‘look-a-like’ outfits and style ideas. Also, it is impossible to find guys singlets that are low like they are in Australia. They are all high neck, like T-Shirts that have their arms cut off. Very European! All of the stores are also in the swing of the Soccer World Cup. You can’t go anywhere in Amsterdam without seeing bright splashes of Dutch Orange.
After Ed left for his last little burn on the motorbike, I set off for the Poozenboot. It was really great to see the stray kitties have a safe refuge in the town. Unfortunately, most of them have trust issues and are very apprehensive to come near people. The few that wanted to be pat received much affection from me in the short
time I was there.
We arrived in Athens to the beautiful temperature of twenty-four with bright sunshine! For the Greeks, the onset of summer hasn’t quite registered yet and most people are still walking around in jeans. They look at Ed and I in our shorts and tops like we’re half naked, it’s quite funny. Our hotel is gorgeous and we eat very well every morning. It’s also very close to a metro station and the trains here are amazing. They are so frequent and very new, having only being constructed shortly before the Olympic Games here in 2004.
We visited the ancient Acropolis first up and trolled our way through the traditional Plaka and Monastiriaki districts. Some quality shopping was to be done at the popular Ermou Street also. I met up with my friend Katie (who was my tour roommate back in 2008 when I first visited Europe) who has been living in Athens since last August. I resisted getting stuck into exploring the city over the past few days purely because I will be spending eight days here with Katie after I get back from Santorini. Athens is one of those cities where there is
plenty to see- most of the ‘real Athenian’ experiences are to be had off the beaten track. She took us to a great place for lunch and spoke Greek the entire time, making us feel very guilty. Nevertheless the food was fantastic and service is always wonderful.
One of my new favourite foods is Gyros. It is basically a small thick Pita filled with shredded meat, tomato, tatziki, lettuce/capsicum and hot chips. Yes, I said hot CHIPS. It is DELICIOUS. So far we’ve had everything from big plates of Gyros you make up yourself (for about 8-10 euro) through to small ones made on the side of the road for just 1.80 euro (about $2.70AUD). Such a bargain for such a yumm, filling meal! We’ve also tried quite a few desserts as well…and I’m sure even more delicious experiences are to be had on the Greek Islands!
Talk soon xx Much love to all!
