Hi to all, an eventful and slightly challenging series of hops to get here but we are all now safely and happily escconced in central Athens for a bit of history before headfing for Crete on a ship tonight from Piraeus port.
Ben telling us in the plane via the personal entertainment systems he was surfing on that our first destination (Bangkok) was featuring on BBC world news as a result of the state of emergency declared there was a good introduction to the realities of travel in various parts of the world.
All was calm for us and Deb had scored on line a brand new apartment and pool complex which was excellent. Kids managed well on nil sleep for 24 hrs and we got out on a magical night cruise on the river ( well recommended)
Next stop early morning departure to Dubai, thoroughly modern but way too overcrowded airport where it seems all of arabia, africa and some of Oceania meet to connect planes to somewhere else.
People sleeping or waiting wherever they can find space.
A glorious day flight at last to Athens from there with a magical view of Dubai, middle east
Iraq etc in ten different shades of beige, then the contrast of the sky blue mediterranean, turkey and the greek islands en route to Athens.
A near lost luggage event and figured our way by train into city ( thank god for olympics spending on infrastructure - a modern train system !!) Lovely cold local beer meat and Greek salad Dinner for 4 tired Kiwis at local taverna Atark ( highly recommended ) then all had great sleep - even ben 12 hrs !!
Off we head for the acropolis, parliament ruins etc with Ben leading us and Julia a great traveller.
Cheers to all.
