So it is a bit cliche to have a toga party in Greece but having an Animal House style party at the Pink Palace was so much fun we have hardly stopped talking about it. We were given pink satin sheets and told to make togas. This called for a lot of creativity on our parts and it kinda sucked because trying to make a sheet into a hot outfit was just not happening. Plus the things were blazing hot and made me feel like I was wearing a winter coat. We found some girls in the hall who helped us look like slutty(but respectful of course mom) ancient greecians. Dinner was frickin amazing. People complained about the food at the hostel but I devoured it. Everyone went to the bar afterwards for ouzo and other drinks and waited for the party to begin. Melissa and I and our friend Stevie from Canada started dancing before everyone else as usual and soon the craziness had begun. We took a break from the dancing to have some traditional greek dancers perform. They were real cute and the dancing looked so fun. Then they broke plates over everyones head and then the owner of the hostel came out and made a ring of fire which freaked me out and then picked up a table with his teeth! It was pretty bad ass. Then we went back to dancing and Melissa and I were caught up in the craziness of the party until 4 in the morning. And had to leave for Athens at 7. Who needs sleep?
Athens is hot. Polluted. Oh and has the Acropolis. That is my say on Athens. The heat is unbearable so we went and saw some sights for a few hours and have hung around our hostel hiding from the monsterous sun. We went to a dress shop owned by an old greek woman and man who were just hilarious. I got a bloody nose while in there and when i dropped my tissue the old woman picked it up and unfolded it showing me the pattern and then sang and danced with it...to make me laugh? Then proceeded to pinch my cheeks and kiss me. Those odd greeks. Last night a greek man and an italian man approached Melissa and I and invited us to drinks in a romantic setting, in thier words, and told us they were shocked by our beauty so they had to meet us. Typical over the top greek flattery. Melissa starting speaking to the Italian and I got stuck with the Greek who was a 28 yr old computer programmer who told me he loved poetry and that when he sees a beautiful girl something is borne in him and he must talk to her and make her happy. We told them we had to go and then he kissed my hand and went for the face and I freaked out and said no no no ive known you for 5 min. and we got out of there. Greek men are FAR more forward and complementive than Italian men. A man gave us postcard of Plaka today and told us we could stay at this house anytime...sketchy perhaps but a nice offer. The Greeks are such kind people and today this American woman made me so angry. She was speaking to a girl who is American but married a greek man and lives her now. The American said Oh my dear you must cry every night missing home! The girl said Oh no I love it here. The American looked shocked and said My dear I will pray for you. America has everything and now you must live here! Is he good to you? Do you have children? The American seemed to not be able to believe that the Greek man could treat her ok and was hoping it was Gods will that they would never have children. The woman who lived in Greece replied Oh America is spoiled. I think its wonderful to live in a new culture and it has made me stronger. The woman looked at her like she was a lost soul said something else about praying for her then left. I looked at the girl and we both laughed at the stupidity of the small minded old American women.
Tomorrow we leave for Naxos and I cant wait to get out of the city and into the island life again. Corfu gave me a taste of the good life.
OH sidenote: So in Italy there are these new ice cream bars called Magnums. Total phallic symbols going on with the advertising. It is hilarious. Now in Greece they have them but they are called Magic. I really wonder why it was changed....
