2 more days in Madrid and we set off again, this time heading South towards the small town of Manilva, where Sarah, one of Mark’s ex-colleagues, has set up home with her partner Dom. Unfortunately we missed Dom as he was working in the UK at the time and we only managed to catch him for about 10 min on his way to work on Wednesday. Our hostess for a couple of nights gave us some pretty insightful information into what awaits us, having travelled for a year herself with Dom, and regaled us with some interesting stories, including one about a 14 hour bus journey in Cambodia involving some deep-fried cockroaches as snacks (which we mentioned a few pages back). Can’t wait now! Being just a half-hour’s drive away from Gibraltar, we couldn’t resist the ... read more

Hello Campers! This is my introductary journal entry which I write from the compounds of Surreyshire dwellings. I shall be in Johannesburg in a weeks time - June 15th, spending three weeks along the southern coast of South Africa, and then dipping into Singapore (five days) before two months in Australia, going along New South Wales and Queensland and then a month and bit seeing New Zealand and Fiji... Literally chasing the sun, as the seasons in the southern hemi are approaching Winter as the Northern goes into the core of Summer period, but Im sure Ive got my clothes balanced just right for Northern Australia and Fiji's warmer moments! Ill try to keep my logs entertaining and with photos! More half English - half Elvish scribes to come from me later.... best wishes Pat ... read more

On our way to our Hotel in Algeciras, which is where we stayed before venturing to Morocco, we didn´t know what to expect. For 25 euros per night including breakfast I didn´t expect much. The lobby of the hotel was under construction and looked a bit sketchy, but the front desk and the man working there looked very profesional. The place was pretty empty so they upgraded our room to one with a view, room 905. When we got into our room I was amazed, it was clean, marble floors and a view to die for. It looked over the port of Algeciras, and across the bay we could see a rock foundation that looked quite familiar. It was maybe five miles away from us and it was the Rock of Gibraltar. That was so awesome, ... read more

Our last day of fun! Today we tour Gibraltar. Upon arrival we were met by mini-tour buses to take us on our 90-minute tour of ‘the Rock’, which wound it’s way up near to the top, discussing a lot of the Rock’s political and military history, with the following stops: - Europa Point, the view point of the straits of Gibraltar and Morocco (but we couldn’t see anything as it was so over cast) - St. Michael’s Cave - The Apes Den St. Michael’s Cave has a good sampling of stalactites and stalagmites, but probably the most interesting thing is the cave is the fallen stalagmite because you can see the interior, which looks much like the inside of a tree trunk. There’s also a theatre inside the cave, interesting because we had seen a Spanish ... read more

Well, the first of April has come and gone and now it´s almost half over, along with our semester as we have just survived midterms! Not much has happened since spring break ended, except Laura´s parents visited from the states, I went to a tea house for a belly dancing show, and we visited Gibraltar last weekend. Okay, the tea house was kind of a surprise. Natalie asked me to go have tea with her and her friend so I met them there after hearing eating a supper interrupted by news that the Pope had died. More on those effects later. We went into the Arabian market neighborhood and stopped at a tea house where there was a belly dancer there to put on a show. It was kinda weird and she wasn´t too amazing, but ... read more

Yesterday was my most exciting day yet! I woke up in Sevilla, Spain, a wonderful city that I have incredably fond memories of from my first voyage. Chelsea, one of my travel companions, was sick so she and her boyfriend Mark decided to stay in Sevilla another night (we were suppoed to wake up and go to Morocco together). I went out alone and got some traveller´s checks, then went to the Sevilla cathedral and the Alcazar palace. The palace is an incredable monument that I somehow missed on my last trip. It was built by one of the Spanish kings in the middle ages, but its entirely done in the Moorish Islamic style, complete with tile work showing Koranic poetry. Apparently after the Spanish reconquered southern Spain, all the Moorish craftsman stuck around and continued ... read more

Cognition on the Costa Del Sol: Adapted from a much longer version especially for TravelBlog.org It's nearly Monday afternoon by the time we get started and there isn’t much time left. Trying to film Dennis Mckenna isn’t easy because he keeps making me laugh, and to make things worse my arm muscles have locked up after hours of filming without a tripod and I’m oxygen starved because I’ve slowed my breathing to get smoother takes so when Dennis eventually decides to give it a break I’m relieved enough to offer him a ride to Gibraltar to see the Pillars of Hercules, even though it’s already after 3.00 PM. Fortunately, it’s light till after 10.00PM on the Costa Del Sol, so this is not a problem. The Digging up my passport, which I haven’t seen for nearly ... read more

Who wants to go through all the trouble of securing a UK visa for a day trip to the Rock of Gibraltar? In my home country, a UK visa is as rare as a visa for the US, and costs quite a lot. A day in the Rock of Gibraltar does not do justice to the nearly US$100 we paid for the visa to enter this UK colony. The Rock The Rock is a crown property of United Kingdom in the southern coast of Spain. This limestone promontory juts out into the Strait of Gibraltar and on a clear day, one can enjoy a glimpse of Northern Africa across the Strait . History claims that the area was named after a former slave Tariq who led an army guarding the Rock. Natives thus called the rock ... read more

The Rock of Europe is a mighty sight. Ancient people knew it as Hercules’ pillars. The gateway to the big ocean, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. James Bond raced a car down the rock while fighting an evil dude. A major accomplishment, considering the roads are rarely no wider than the car. The combined length of the roads and tunnels inside the rock are as long as the combined length of the roads outside it in the territory of Gibraltar. Interesting fact. Not as interesting as the monkeys though. They are cute. They bite. And they steal peanuts, from your hand or your pocket or your handbag. They are very clever. And they are untouchable. Tradition says that as long as they are there, the Rock will remain British. ... read more
