28 May 2016 We headed for another of Thuringian’s towns, Eisenach. Eisenach is famous for two things. Firstly on a hill just outside the town lies Wartburg, one of Germany’s most famous castles where Martin Luther was held in protective custody and wrote his translation into German of the new testament. We drove to the bottom of the hill but the road up to the castle was closed as the car park was full, it being the Saturday of a holiday weekend. So we gave that idea up and found an excellent camper stop just outside the town.
The camper stop owner kindly drove us into the centre of Eisenach where we learnt at the Bachhaus about the town’s other claim to fame, it is the birthplace of Johann Sebastion Bach. The exhibition in his house traces his life and music.
