10 May 2016 On a day of intermittent periods of rain we went to Liege but couldn’t find any parking near the old town so continued to Aachen and an excellent camper stop we have visited a couple of times before.
In the afternoon we went into the city centre which turned out to be a longer walk than I had expected as I had misread the direction signs. Aachen is famous for its association with Charlemagne who made the city the capital of his vast Frankish empire in 974 and built the first part of the cathedral where he is buried. We went on a guided tour of the building and afterwards had a wander around the old cobbled streets finally visiting the Gothic Rathaus built in the 14
th century.
