The next morning we had a quick breakfast and then walked to the cable car site near our hotel. We had planned to go on a salt mine tour and it was an adventure to get there. After one vertical cable car and a 20 minute hike, we reached the site where we would take the tour. Halllstat houses 1 of the 3 salt mines in Austria and this particular mine was around even before Rome was built. We were provided protective clothing to wear and led by a man in leiderhosen. It was a great tour that included two wooden slides and a wooden train still used by miners along with a laser show inside the mine. Hard to imagine people spend all their lives, hours on end, working in dark, cold places to provide a product we take for granted every day. They shared with us how salt ended up in mountains and how it was discovered by noticing deer licking on rocks. After the tour, we made our way back to town to get our bags and head for the harbor. We took pictures along the way and with some time before our ferry back, Jordan headed to
a museum in the church where they housed skulls from the religious people of the town. At 13:30 we took a ferry again across the lake to the train station. The train would be taking us back to Salzburg from where we would be taking a train to Munich, Germany. We were devastated to leave breathtaking Hallstatt especially not being super excited to see the Deutschland.
We arrived in Munich late afternoon. It was a huge train station and very clean. We had learned that the Germans are very strict and it was in our best interest to closely follow the rules and the laws. There was huge photo exhibit in the station that was especially moving which we paused to see. Then we followed the not so great walking directions to our hotel which was not so far from the train station. We had decided to stay near the station because of our short time in Munich. We realized we were not thrilled with where our hotel was located so once we checked in, for the first time, we were not in a rush to go out and sightsee. We didn't set out until 21:00 as we were
uncomfortable with our surroundings. Of course, we made light of the situation while still being vigilant. We walked a lot and towards the direction of the main sties. We passed a number of shops and restaurants along the way and the city was filled with people of all ages. It was definitely a place where people were out late. Committed to trying an authentic restaurant for dinner, we selected a very German place with a courtyard in the center and had a traditional meal, which included creamed spinach, a fried egg, and boiled potatoes. Not the most exciting or flavorful cuisine but the Bavarian chocolate cake with Bavarian cream made up for it. After dinner, we walked around some more but as the crowds got rowdier, we decided it was time to get back. So we jumped into a cab and asked to be taken to our hotel. The cab driver knew the location as they are required to memorize all of the hotel locations in order to get their license (in this case, over 200). We were happy to be back at the hotel and ready to say good night to Munich.
