Schwerin castle
We got up early this morning, especially early since my (Susan) breakfast was delivered 45 minutes early and I was still in bed. We left to visit Schwerin Castle, one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. It took about 1.5 hours on the bus to get there, but we considered ourselves lucky. Those who were going to spend the day in Berlin had to leave at the crack of dawn and were on a train 3.5 hours each way. We had both been to Berlin at least twice, so we chose to visit the castle. Both of us decided we would never make it living back in the time the castle was used. Besides the boredom, we couldn't stand the heat, especially in the layers and layers of clothes they wore. We both got overheated during the tour, especially me. After leaving the castle, we had a little time to walk around the town there. The city is the capital of the state of Mecklenburg, and part of the castle is used for the parliament today.
We returned to the ship and ate a small lunch on the veranda before heading into what was billed as a small coastal town. This beach community, a getaway for many Germans, was a cross between Coney Island and a 1920s coastal town. There were many, many little shops and thousands of people walking around. It was so crowded. We walked through the village, past the amusements and to the beach where we took pictures of the coast and the beautiful old lighthouse. We only spent a little over an hour there because it was so crowded. We retired to our rooms before heading to our first dinner together since the night we boarded the ship. What a pleasure it was.
