crooked roofline
house is also leaning Wednesday, May 21 Bamberg At breakfast we were going through a lock. I made the comment that we must be almost through since we are just about at the waterline – duh – waterline moves with us in the lock that’s how it works. Cracked up the boaters in our breakfast group. Spent the morning doing this – trying to remember what we’d done for the last 5 days. Lorna just came up to Lynn and me to warn us that she googled and knew they sell Desigual in some of the stores here. We are now on alert. The town has some very good architectural elements. I love the houses near an old bridge that are leaning one way and then the rooflines go another way. After the tour we left the men at a beer haus to try their famous smoky beer and then we wove our way through the shops in town. Did not have enough time to see them all. Lots of good photos. Weather was absolutely hot and sunny. At dinner we had the most delicious lamb chops I’ve ever had. Beautiful sunset evening. 10,502 steps
city hall
passageway through city hall in Bamberg Thursday, May 22 Wurzburg Our tour started at the Prince Bishop’s Residenz – a huge 300+ room home. A white room with stucco work that was unbelievable – drapery on the ceiling that looked real. A mirror room that was completely covered in painted, stuccoed, and gilt mirror. It was jaw dropping – seems all the monarchies and wealthiest of that era were trying to upstage Versailles. In his explanations the guide was saying that wine and beer were the liquids of choice since water was the carrier of disease etc. But a law had to be passed since women were not getting their daily chores completed. Henceforth a woman was allowed only 7 bottles of wine per day. That would certainly help. From the Residenz we walked back through the town to the ship for lunch. Then Simps and LJ’s decided to walk up to the fortress for a good look – of course they built the fortress on the highest, steep hill around – reward was to be ice cream at the end. After huffing and puffing we were rewarded with spectacular views but the ice cream
up there was not handmade – only the little wrapped versions such as an ice cream sandwich. So back into the town and a fair bit of walking trying to find real ice cream. After dinner we had a glass-blower come aboard and do a demo. Hans was like a Jay Leno/shopping channel host combo. Very funny and entertaining. 16,081 steps – having that ice cream may have cancelled the step benefits – oh well
Friday, May 23 Wertheim Learned some German history from a very entertaining guide this morning. This town has a leaning tower that was used as a jail cell. People were dropped into the bottom of the tower for a 2 week sentence – no light, no toilet and minimal food. Not a pleasant place especially if you had a cellmate. Gorgeous looking brick castle that most climbed to get the view. I stayed in town helping Orlis shop. Ross took some good photos though. Spent the sunny afternoon cruising the river, reading a book, so copasetic. Before dinner we had a birthday celebration for Dex and then
