We left Muerren at 8:30 (the mountains were out again), riding the cable car down to the valley with several very energetic pre-schoolers. I was a bit sad as we drove out of the valley, but I reminded myself that in 2010 I never thought I'd see the place again, and I did. So maybe I will again.
The drive was pretty uneventful. Our first rest stop, while still in Switzerland, had a Fifties-style American diner called Cindy's. Kind of hilarious. We all got rid of our Swiss change by buying more chocolate: dark chocolate Bounty and Milky Way for John, and a hazelnutty Milka thing for me.
We stopped for lunch in Lindau, an old town on an island in Lake Constance (also called the Bodensee) that is popular with German tourists. John and I walked around a bit and then ate lunch at Nordsee, a chain fish restaurant. I had fish and chips in a paper cone; they weren't too bad, actually. And then we found gelato. I have a knack for that! The town was cute and has a rather grand-looking harbor. The sun came out again and started to heat things up. The last thing I need
right now is more sun! I already look like a cherry tomato.
On the bus, I know Daniela gave us some history of Bavaria, etc., but the lunch and the motion of the bus and the sun made me very, very sleepy. I never did fall asleep, but I did zone out … way out. What perked me up was when we got caught in a traffic jam on the autobahn. We had nearly reached the site of the accident that was holding everything up, when the polizei decided to stop all the traffic so that the tow-truck guy could get the wrecked car up on his flatbed and then sweep the pavement. Nobody seemed to be in a hurry to get traffic going again. We lost a good 20-25 minutes with all that.
We arrived in Munich around 6:20 and are staying at the Hotel am Viktualienmarkt, which is near the (surprise!) Viktualienmarkt. We had a little while to freshen up and then went to dinner at 7:00. Daniela's father, who still lives in Munich, came along with us. If you conjure up a picture of a German dad (but replace the lederhosen with regular clothes), you will have a pretty
good idea of what he looked like.
I'm not sure where exactly we had dinner. The walk took about 15 minutes, and the streets and plaza were so crowded that I never did get a look at the name of the restaurant. At any rate, we were served by a men in lederhosen and a woman in a dirndl, and we had brotzeit (a platter of ham, braunschweiger, pickles, shaved radish and regular radishes) and pretzels. Yummers! And then we had sauerbraten with spaetzle. It was very good, but I couldn't finish mine. Dessert was vanilla ice cream with warm raspberry sauce. Plus, I had a beer and John had "eine mass," which is one of those huge mugs of beer. He seems to be none the worse for wear though!
We walked back through the Marienplatz (still crowded because of late-night shopping tonight) and the Viktualienmarkt. We met two other couples at the door to the hotel trying to get in. Reception closes at 9:00, and it was well after. None of our keys worked. Fortunately, some guy turned up who knew whom to call, and it turned out we needed a code to get in. Sheesh! It would have
been nice if someone had told us.
Very much looking forward to the pillow now.

Fun! That Bortzeit is so festive looking! And sounds delicious! Dang, I'm always hungry after reading your entries...So neat that Daniela got to spend time with her Dad and you all got to meet him. I bet he was tickled that she was home
for a bit! Hope you got a good night's sleep!
