So we left NZ on the 17th Jan and were very excited for our first trip to Europe. The flight to Munich although very very long was not too bad I was suprised at how well we felt when we arrived in Munich at 5am 18th Jan. It was pitch black when we arrived and we both couldn't believe how easy it was to come through customs; no arrival card, no asking of our movements, no showing of an outbound ticket a guy just scanned and stamped our passports and we were in!
We were in no hurry so we cruised and made our way outside to the train station, it was -7°C and we were both excited to be in the cold especially Jono he was stoked he could finally wear a jacket. The train ride into the city took about 40 mins and we arrived at our hostel at 7.30am we were super early for our 2pm check in but we were able to drop our bags off in a locker room and go check out the city.
We grabbed a coffee and decided to walk down to the Marienplatz (old town square). First thing we notice
are the buildings look old and are beautiful, second thing everybody looks stylish in their coats and jackets and third thing there are clocks everywhere!
The old town hall is neo gothic in design and looks amazing, it has gargoyles, dragons and various other statues all over it. It is also where the Glockenspiel is housed, it is a carrilon and we went to watch it at 12pm. We headed back to the hostel to check in and have a rest.
We must of been more tired then we tought because we laid down to have a nap at 3pm and we woke up the next day! The plan today was to take the walking tour, because the weather was not as nice, it was drizzling outside there were only Jono and I and two American boys on the tour. We had no idea what to expect but it was great we learnt so much about Bavarian history. Our tour guides name was Ozzie and it took us 4 hours, we learnt that Germany was formed as a result of the Franco - Prusian war, it is made up of 16 states with 8 countries bordering it. Bavavria
did not sign the constitution and therefore they have their own seperate passports, law and police. The whole tour Ozzie was drilling into us that "what is Bavarian is not German", you will offend a Bavarian if you call them a German. We had a great time on the tour and learnt a lot about Bavarian history. As you may already know Munich was the city where the Nazi party was born, on the tour we went to the most popular beer hall Hofbrauhaus and on the top floor there is a hall where Hitler held the very first Nazi party meeting. After the tour finished we went back to the hostel for a rest.
As with the day before I was reading my book and dozzed off at about 5ish and once again woke up the next morning, it seemed we wern't adjusting to the time difference here. Our friend Mat is flying in today to meet us. After we met him we went for a walk down to the Marienplatz , changed some money and then went to the Hofbrauhaus for a catch up. This is not a traditional beer hall and everything is put on for
the tourists but we still had fun. Afterward we bumped into an Aussie from the hostel and he joined us when we went and climbed the 297 steps up the 92m tower of St Peters church. The view wasn't as good as it could of been becasue of the rain and snow but it was still great. Later that evening we finally had a dinner in Munich, we went to one of the the Augustineer beer halls and had a delicious meal then we went to Euro bar for a bit then headed home to get ready for our journey the next day to Austira for snowboarding......
