I gave up Nymphenburg Palace and took a self-walking tour instead in the morning.
With the help of the guide map from my hostel, I started with Karlsplatz, passed the Augustiner Beerhall at Neuhausserstr. and came to Frauenkirche, one of the landmarks and symbols of the Bavarian State Capital. It was constructed from red brick in the late Gothic style and can hold around 20,000 people, which was surprising at the end of the 15th Century because the city only had about 13,000 inhabitants at that time. Standing at the entrance where an attraction, Devil’s Footstep, lied at, none of the side windows could be seen. Other features included the Gothic Nave, several stained-glass windows and the tomb monument of Louis IV, Holy Roman Emperor at its basement. The church also buried some members of the Wittelsbach dynasty.
I left Frauenkirche, went along Residenz Str. and arrived at two lions, the landmark of Odeonplatz. Then I followed the map and came to Hofgarten, before trying to locate Haus der Kunst. I was a bit tired of museums so I decided not to check this out and went to Englischer Garten, the largest urban public park in Germany (probably in
the world) straight ahead. Omg it’s so huge that I couldn’t see its end. I kept walking without direction until I saw the sign indicating the way to Chinesischer Turm (which I wasn’t that interested in). I got out of the park in order not to get lost again and tried to find the direction to Deutsches Museum.
I arrived there at around 1pm. The museum was much larger than I thought, and it could be both boring and fun. As a foreigner in Germany, I couldn’t understand the information exhibitions conveyed because many of them were in German only. However, many of the exhibitions were interactive which displayed the science and technology from the past and present effectively. I especially like the music room as it showed a lot of music instruments and there was a guy who explained the technology demonstrated from the instruments of different periods. I wandered around the museum, came to a lift and got to the rooftop to take photos of the whole city of Munich. Weather was bad so I didn’t stay long there. I spent the whole afternoon in the museum, but I was only able to finish half of the
exhibitions. As the museum is closing soon, I followed the crowds and left.
I returned to my hostel to take a break and waited for Natalie until 7:15pm. It’s a pity that we couldn’t meet up at last. Then I checked the location of Olympic Tower with the hostel staff. When I got out of Olympia Centrum station, the weather was so foggy that I could hardly tell where Olympic Tower was without the help of its spotlight, so I followed some students and passed the Olympia Park to find it. The 290m-tower was inaugurated in 1968 and is the central point for television and radio in South Bavaria. There is a revolving restaurant to enjoy food, but it was closed and I was able to visit the exhibition area above the restaurant, where it displayed the piano that Elton John played in a concert, and the open terrace, where I was supposed to see the whole Munich. It’s a bit disappointing because the weather was so foggy and all I could see clearly were the Olympia Park and the BMW building nearby. Night view of the city was not that attracting and everything was dark.
It was
around 9pm when I got back to Karlsplatz and went to Augustiner Beerhall to see if there’s anything good to eat. I read its menu and it looked expensive to me so I headed back to the hostel for cheaper restaurants. I tried to figure out the direction but I was failed and lost. It took me a while to locate myself again. Well I shouldn’t have been lazy in checking map. It was great that the Italian restaurant opposite to my hostel still opened at the time I was starving. I grabbed myself some pizza and lemon coke with only 5 euros before going back to hostel. I was so full when I got back to my room.
