Munich
Julie J Vanover When I arrived in Munich I thought about what I really wanted to see here- which was the Neuschwanstein Castle and the Romantic Road. Neither of which are in Munich, they are both day trips from Munich. So I explored Munich and saw the glockenspiel- which is quite a sight- and the famous beer halls and then was going to do my day excursions from Munich. So I headed out to Garmish to see Neuschwanstein Castle. A 1 1/2 hour train ride there and I found out this isn't where the castle is, the castle is 70 kilometers away. My guide book said that this was a great place to book a tour of the castle so I just assumed that this is where is was and I still don't understand why my guide book said to go from here when there is a direct train from Munich to Fussen. So I headed back to Munich not seeing the castle and wasting a day of sightseeing, but I did get to see Zugpitze- the highest mountain in Germany. I felt really dumb, but I went off the information that I had and didn't do any homework so it's my fault.
Town Hall
This is the town hall, which is just way to big to get into a shot. Where you see the scaffolding is where the glockenspeil is. Seeing the glockenspeil really is a treat. They dance and fight and go around, dorky but cool. I guess that this is a dissadvantage to traveling the way that I do.
That night I was checking on my email and started talking to the girl next to me. Everyone from her room was going out, so I ended up going out with them. I thought that we were going to a beer house, which I was very excited about because I hadn't been to a beer house in Munich because I don't drink beer and I didn't want to go to a beer house by myself and not drink any beer. It would just be a little ackward. So were following the guy from New Zealand who was supposed to take us to a club and where do we end up? At a black club in Munich, Germany. I didn't even know that a black club existed here come to think of it this was my first black club I have ever been to in my life- in Munich. Great! It was an adventure to say the least.
The next day I woke up and went to Fussen, the city where the castle actually is and went and saw the castle. For those of you
Glockenspiel
The tower of this building was under construction (imagine that) and this was the only part of the tower that was exposed. not familiar with Neuschwanstein Castle, it is the castle that Disney took his inspiration from when he designed the 'Sleeping Beauty' castle. So they look very similar, it is also the 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' castle. This castle built for King Ludwig II who had an artist design the castle. This is by every means of the word a fairy tale castle which is what makes it so fantastic. I bought my ticket for the castle but my tour wasn't for another 3 hours. So I slowly hiked- and what a hike- my way up to the castle. I stopped at Marien's Bridge which goes over a lovely waterfall. Had a picnic lunch and walked around th castle waiting for my tour to start. The only way to go through the castle was a tour, which I'm not too fond of tours.
Finally the time for my tour to start arrived, yes! King Ludwig II went crazy and died before the castle was completed so there were only about 10 rooms of the castle that are finished and we got to see all of these rooms. They were very pretty and lovely but we were very rushed through the
Frauenkirche
This is the huge church that is next to their town hall, but it is so close to the buildings next to it that you cannot get a really good shot. tour. And they didn't want us to take pictures , but I took some pictures and hung around the back of the group to see everything. I saw more of the next tour coming through than of my tour. There were about 60 people in each tour so it was really hard to hear the lady anyway. This really was a magical place. You could almost tell that it was built for someone who just wasn't quite right.
I got out of my tour and hurried down the mountain to try to catch the next train and made it just in time. I arrived in Munich with just enough time to pick up my pack, check my email and get a bite to eat. Then I was off to Budapest on a night train. I looked into the Romantic Road but they had changed the schedule and I would be on a bus or a train for 15 hours straight without being able to get out and walk around, and with my wasted day to Garmish it just didn't happen. I also really didn't do very much tourist stuff in Munich either, I just walked
Just the castle
This is taken from Mary´s Bridge, see the lake and mountains in the background. So beautiful, I took so many pictures. around the city alot and people watched. I was for the most part pretty mellow which I think I needed, so I will have to be a super sightseer on my next trip through Munich because there really was alot of cool things to see.
