I always liked watching ski jumping on TV, especially memorable are those days when I was a kid and every New Year's day or few days later, the whole family would watch ski jumping competition held every year at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Never did I think I would end up there, not jumping, but skiing, or actually, attempting to ski, to be precise. Now that my ski vacation is over, I can say that we spent 10 wonderful days in Germany, and that I highly recommend this place for skiers and non-skiers too.
We found great accommodation in Garmisch, in a traditional house with just 4-5 apartments, cosy enough to rest after a day of skiing, or sight-seeing. Garmisch, as well as its next door neighbour Partenkirchen, is a lovely small town with everything you need for a great vacation. Should I mention that we were surrounded by bakeries, which deliver freshly baked pastries (including bretzles, brioche, croissants, and many other types of bread) every morning to your doorstep?😊 Restaurants offer similar menu, but it's quite a long list of great dishes, and not just bratwurst and saurkraut, but venison stew, roasts, fish and other delicacies we just had to try, and weren't

disappointed. The dessert specialty of the whole area seems to be a simple, yet very tasty meal (it's quite a challenge for one person to eat it all) called Dampfnudeln, which is basically a dumpling (light yeast dough), sometimes filled with plum sauce, bathed in vanilla sauce (custard), sprinkled with powdered sugar and sometimes with poppy seeds too ... yummmy!
The area around the town is breathtaking as well, but more about that in the next blog entry. Skiing was scary, for me. I have to admit, it's waaay too high for someone with an irrational, but yet real, fear of heights. I managed to ski a bit, but then decided I should enjoy the view, sip excellent warm (mould) wine and sunbathe.😊 Would I go there again? Definitely!
