Altes Rathausl, Bamberg, Germany
Landmark building & porcelain museum July 31, 2018. Bamberg, Germany. Bamberg, has over 2,000 historical monuments, the largest collection in Europe, which makes it a delight to wander the streets. The guided tour led us by the Old Town Hall with its clock tower; mural-covered exterior and elaborately-carved balconies, on to Bamberg Cathedral, a primarily Romanesque church with later Gothic features, completed in the 13th century and which is the seat of the Archbishop of Bamberg.
After having lunch in the rose garden of Neue Residenz (New Residence) Bamberg, Simon and I took a tour of this 17th century palace, the seat of Bamberg's prince bishops until 1802. They evidently lived in Baroque splendor. It is an eye-popping series of rooms (over 40) with crystal chandeliers; plaster scrollwork; murals of mythical scenes; portraits; gilding, all stylistically similar in their incredible visual opulence to other Baroque and rococo palaces and churches we'd seen elsewhere in Europe.
