Heidelberg
Famous Bridge Yesterday we got up, had some breakfast and hit the road. We decided to take the long way through the black forest. We drove for a few hours and stopped off at a small restaurant for lunch. It was right at the start of the Black Forest Highway. It was really crowded, and really really slow. I think only 2 or 3 people worked there. Our lunch was very tasty though, so it was worth the wait. The Highway was really nice, but we passed a lot of trees that were either dead or had been burned or something. Big sections of forest were gone. We pulled off to go on one trail, but it was really cold out and the path didn't look that interesting. Later we pulled off at another place and thought we found a path, but not really. We were walking in the trees and the ground was kind of springy with detritus. Adam wanted to go find the real path so we wouldn't get lost in the woods. It was cool in there, but kind of scary. It seemed easy to get lost. We couldn't find a real path though. We continued our driving and eventually
made it to Hockenheim. Our hotel is right off the road and is not very fancy, but it works.
This morning we slept in a bit and then got ready to go into Heidelberg. The main part of town is really charming. It's by a river with cobblestone streets. We walked around for awhile, and then decided to get some lunch. Adam picked a place from the guidebook, which was an old student tavern. It was decorated with old student and fraternity photos and memorabilia. The food there was fantastic. There was a large group of people eating near us and looking at all the pictures. There was one picture by where Adam was sitting that the group kept coming over and looking at and exclaiming in a different language. It turned out that one of their father's was in the photo. Everyone came over to look and take pictures. They had traveled from Switzerland and had come eaten here to find that picture. It was cool, especially for them!
After lunch we walked up a SUPER steep (but luckily short) hill to the Schloss. It had started to drizzle. It was cool up there because the building

View of town from the schloss was still mostly standing but some of the towers had collapsed. We walked around for awhile and it started actually raining. Of course this was the one day we didn't bring the umbrella with us! We went inside a small museum dedicated to the old school apothecaries. There were a lot of displays on the medicine and herbs/spices from the time. There was even a laboratory, which had this glass thing that looked like it had no opening. I have no idea what it was for or how it was used, but it was strange and cool to look at. When we left the museum it was raining really hard, so we headed back down to the town and went to use an internet cafe to print out or boarding passes for the plane. There was a guy there next to us who I think overheard Adam and I discussing his Dr. prefix for his ticket, because he asked Adam if he was a physician. It turns out he grew up near Moffet Field (like us) and went to UCLA and was a doctor who worked in an anti-aging lab. He's now retired and a musician. It was kind of

We left and went back to the hotel to pack and get ready to leave tomorrow. I can't believe 3 weeks passed by already. I had a lot of fun on this trip and it was nice to take things slower and not feel too rushed and always moving. I can't wait to come back again someday.
