Discussing what to do on our way to Boulogne, I thought about my father’s brother Ernest Walter Hughes who I discovered had died in World War 1 on 22 March 1918. A quick look at the CWCG site revealed that his name was on the memorial at Pozieres.

We were glad we made the detour. On the memorial there were photos of the fallen left by relatives as well as remembrance crosses at the foot of some panels. Sadly I have no photo of my uncle.

We headed to Boulogne planning to spend the night on the quay overlooking the harbour only to find that in 2008 the Council had banned parking for motor homes. Luckily we found a campsite just further north at Wimereux. We were able to walk into the town for a last French meal.
