Hi, there.
Sunday afternoon we drove to a campground just outside of Rome. It was extremely buggy, and I counted 15 mosquito bites on my legs alone...
Monday we headed into the touristy city that is Roma, Italia. We caught a shuttle>bus>train>subway to downtown Rome at the Colesseum. It was huge, and we could look down and see all of the underground passageways where animals and gladiators were stored. We got to learn plenty about the uses of the Coliseum and gladiators. After that, we walked through the old Roman forum, which contained a lot of really neat and diverse ruins. There was a small Nero museum, too. We went to see the Piazza Venezia where there was a massive building that seemed to be a war memorial, with many white statues everywhere. Words cannot do it justice. Next we walked to the Fontana di Trevi, where there was a huge and beautiful fountain in a relatively small square, also packed with tourists. We walked across the Bridge of Angels, which was neat.
After that came the Basillica di San Pietro, or Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. Mom got her Swiss army knife taken away at security, she had taken
it to cut cucumber😊. The inside of the basilica was so intricate and beautiful, with different statues, monuments, tombs and paintings around every corner. In the middle, of course, was the elaborate tomb of St. Peter. Another neat thing was a slab of marble with the names of all of the Popes back to Peter carved into it. I wondered what would happen when they run out of room on the rock. We were made to walk through a long series of museums with articles collected by the popes. It went on forever, and every room was unbelievably ornate-every inch of ceiling painted, artifacts displayed everywhere. In the middle was the Sistine Chapel, lined with Michaelangelo's paintings everywhere. The sheer number of beautiful paintings was overwhelming. The paintings on the ceiling depicted various events in the church's history and future, like the fall, David and Goliath, and the huge mural of the Day of Judgement. Mom commented that the whole of Vatican City must be beyond priceless. We had supper at a sidewalk cafe, picked up a couple souveniers, and; thouroughly tired, headed back to the campround.
Tuesday we decided to skip Tivoli and Florence because of weather and the
fact that we were all museumed out. We did, however, stop in the famed city of Pisa, and see the Tower there. In short, it does in fact lean quite a bit. We drove for a total of around 5.5 hours on Tuesday, and came to our campground and briefly went ot the public beach, a piece of land the size of a large living room.
Wednesday we headed for France. We had planned to stop in both Monaco and Nice, but we couldn’t find parking spots and wasted loads of time trying to find one. We went to the campsite and lazed around for a while and took a train to Nice, where we walkede through the city and down the beautiful boardwalk.
Today, Thursday, we trained into Monaco and went to the Princes’ Palace. We took an audioguide tour and looked from the palace at the many, many yachts. We wanted one. We went back to the campsite, drove another hour and a half to near St Tropaz, in the French Riviera. We went to the beach for a while, and are now hanging around at our lovely campground.
My apologies, pictures are not uploaded yet. Hopefully next
time.
