Hello,
So i realize it has been a while... but Kelly and i have been unbelievably busy the past few weeks. After setting out on our own we have visited Vienna, Austria; Prague, Czech Republic; Budapest, Hungary; and are hanging out in Italy now. Needless to say we have been having a lot of fun (maybe too much) and now are completely exhausted. So the run down, (i promise i will try to keep it brief, but really there is a lot to tell you about)...
Vienna was fantastic! We stayed with a med school student, named Lukas, in the center of down town Vienna. In our 5 days there we made an impressive tour of the university night life scene, saw countless palaces and museums, tasted a plethora of local delicacies (the Pakistani food that was eat waht you want and pay waht you want was fantastic), and spent a good amount of time just absorbing the culture and chatting with the locals. Perhaps an unorthodox use of time, our last night in Austria we headed out to the countryside to a swine farm for the birthday party of one of the guys we befriended while there.
Prague is definitely an interesting city. The old Jewish quarter, and the Jewish museums were truly inspirational and arguably the portion of the city that was the most interesting and impactful. In particular, there was a touching collection of artwork portraying the emotions of the children within the Jewish community in Prague during the holocaust and the city's occupation by the Nazi's. Kelly and i also had the chance to watch the World Cup match between the Czech Republic and the USA while we were in Prague. The national pride was crazy, nearly every person we saw was wearing a jersey and had a flag painted on their face. Even though we lost the game (sniff sniff) getting to watch it in Prague was excellent.
Budapest, other that Rome of course, my favorite city so far, never ceased to amaze me in the 5 days we spent there. From the generosity of everyone we met, to the myriad of absolutely disgusting local beverages we were coerced into trying, we enjoyed every second we spent there. We definitely enjoyed lazying around in the mineral baths and bike riding around Margret Island. Of course i cant really talk about Budapest without
mentioning Alan, who took the time to show Kelly and i the ropes around the city and without whom we could not have seen or experienced nearly all that we did.
Italy has been excellent, although veeeery hot. It was veeeery exciting to go back to Rome, and just as I suspected I felt at home almost immediately. Everything was just as I remembered it, particularly my favorite gelato place which kelly and i managed to visit at least once a day, if not twice! Our hosts were great, cooking us dinner and taking us out to a club opening where their friend was the DJ :D Unfortunately we could only stay with them two nights, so we ended up guess where.....Camping!!!!! haha yes we camped outside Rome in a great spot with a pool and dance club/bar which we definitely hit up.
After Rome, we headed to Florence, where we stayed with another generous host, how generous you ask??? well on our first night there he had 13 couchsurfers staying!!!!! needless to say it was a little cramped, but really 5 people on a pull out couch isn't too many I promise 😉 Otherwise we had an
awesome time exploring Florence, and Kelly even found more if her infamous Kelly bags at the same market that I found the original in there years ago! Needless to say she was very excited haha.
Last but not least we ended our stay in italy in Monterosso, one of the five cities that make up cinqueterre. It is a beautiful little beach town and out three day stay turned into 6 days of complete relaxation on the beach and in the sun. We were productive though and hiked to one of the nieghboring cities called Vernazza, the hike was well to say the least exhausting but well worth it, as Vernazza is a ting little town tucked up against the cliffs with one beautiful beach. We had another awesome host who cooked us homemade Italian dinners and took us to the locals only bar to watch of the Italy world cup matches, and man can those Italians sing and chat along to the game!
Now we are off to France, sadly saying good bye to Italy, but looking forward to a new county and new adventures. Hope all is well at home and miss you all tons! If
you have the chance I'd love to hear updates from everyone so email me when you have a minute at elizabethonsrud@gmail.com
Ciao!!!!
