A bit of a messy start to the day, a nice lie in, as we were staying pitched at L’hippodrome again, coffees and teas, fairly hot showers and we were ready for the off. Unfortunately with no one in the site office we only got as far as the barrier, driving round the site we failed to spot anyone so we sat for a while until a camper pulled through with the barrier card and we shot out after him. Off to McDonalds again (it is for the Wifi honest) once we had located it we headed in for some breakfast and more coffee. Not to be, coffee no problem but the only food available was muffins or cookies, Woolly enjoyed his muffin while we caught up with the world on the wonder of the net.
Woolly says – Muffin consumed, Ian and I waited for Jo to send the four blogs we had been saving before chivvying her out of the place to set off for the Grots!!!! Based on the outskirts of St Pierre sur-Erve near Saulges the leaflet had looked pretty impressive and promised me grots with troglodytes and other finds, I might even find
another Mammoth! Parking Oliver we walked down into the canyon. It was incredibly beautiful and quite a surprise having driven through the windy roads to get to it. With huge rock faces for people to climb we made our way to the first grot which was called Margot. It’s Sunday and wouldn’t you know it, it was closed, as was the second grot known as Rochefort. Peering through the gates I couldn’t see any Mammoths or anything else so we ambled round the canyon admiring the views and stopping for a game of Pooh sticks over the little river, I came second which was pretty good. Jumping back into Oliver we set off for our next destination, with Oliver loving the roads and launching his second attack on the bugs of France (Oliver 532, Bugs still 0).
There did seem to be flying bugs everywhere again but there was also the lovely scenery, very like England with its small roads, cows and sheep in the fields and field after field of yellow rape growing. It was easy to tell when we arrived at the Medieval Town of Sainte Suzanne, with turrets and towers lining the roads and
tiny little streets, it looked delightful.
Woolly says – it was so so pretty, we parked up and made our way to the main square. Having walked around the canyon I was in need of food again so we stopped and looked at menus before sitting down outside a small café just off the square. Madam was very helpful and between us we managed to order a burger for me and Ian and salmon for me and Jo. Very nice it was to! Full up again we meandered through the tiny streets and found the castle, with its high towers and battlements, I got very excited. With nothing to pay we made our way round the ruins and stood in awe at the views that the knights of old would have seen, the keep had a metal stairway running right to the top and I managed to fine 3 latrines!!!! For over an hour we walked through the town, turning corners and coming upon the Chateaux, more towers and the running medieval walls. I thought it was pretty cool that some of the towers are now in peoples back gardens, one garden had even turned their tower
into a shed! A wonderful little town which is definitely a place to visit if you’re passing by. Quite tired from our exertions we set Oliver for the campsite and sat back to enjoy the ride until we got STOPPED by the ROZZERS!!! I was very worried, what had I done wrong?
While Woolly sat staring at the French female officer we showed our passports, Oliver’s wad of documents and were waved on our way, we can only imagine what she thought of the Mammoth in the vehicle – mad English!!!
Woolly says – I was glad it was only a spot check and that I wasn’t going to the cells, I’ve seen loads of prisons in castles and they don’t look very nice. Finally back at the site and a chance to relax, eat pistachio’s and look forward to the morning when we start to head even further southwest, we’ll be at the seaside in no time!
