Pausing in Caen

November 10 – Caen – Saturday – Saturday seems to be a quiet day in Caen. Usually the street below my window at the hotel is bustling but today hardly anyone has been in it but some people standing in a doorway smoking in the cold. Since they can’t smoke inside they stand out in the cold and rain and smoke…….I think if I smoked I would give it up before I would do that.

By the way it was raining today. The first time since I left England that it has rained, it was quite nice not to have rain almost every day. It is somewhat cold though, but I can deal with that.

I had thought the phone that I had gotten in England with an O2 SIMS card would work here but it doesn’t. I considered getting a French chip to put in it but realized that even if I called a hotel or whatever they probably wouldn’t understand or speak English so why waste money on another SIMS card. If I need to talk to someone at home I can do so on Skype free anyway.

I’ve pretty much figured I’ve done Caen so I’ve invested all of today on doing homework on Bayeux, the D Day beaches, and Mont St Michael as well as studying French. Since it was raining I didn’t see any sense in going out anyway. For a bit I thought about going over to the Monoprix store a couple of blocks over and get something for dinner but in the end I just had my cereal and a banana for breakfast and will just fix up some tuna with mayonnaise and whole grain bread for supper. With tea of course. The bread I am eating say’s Complet so I figure it is whole grain although not whole wheat. It does taste good though and is very filling.

When I go out touring I take a few slices in a sandwich bag, some cheese, some mixed nuts, an apple, and my dark chocolate candy bar. While touring I usually snack on a bench somewhere that has a good view. I also bring some bottled water but I only sip on it instead of gulp it down like I would in Texas. Public restrooms are sometimes hard to find here. And there aren’t any water fountains anywhere to refill the bottle if I empty it.

It is so quiet here. Its Saturday night at 21:19 and the only sound I hear are the ones I make on my keyboard typing. Hard to believe its Saturday night.

I remembered that Google has a translator I could use to translate French to English. That has proven very helpful as when I am visiting a web page that is in French (which is almost all of them) I can copy and paste the text into the interpreter and then read it in English. It is arrived at by clicking on the “more” arrow on the Google sight, although I have noticed that I now have to click on “plus” and then “traduction”, to translate stuff. France is taking over my computer bit by bit !

I invested several hours today working on my French and I guess I will invest more time each day on it. Not knowing the language makes almost everything a challenge. And the French really don’t seem to know any English. Although I believe they do but would rather me sound stupid trying to speak French than them sound stupid trying to speak English. After all it IS their country. I know in the states no one tries or has any sympathy for those who can’t speak English. So fair is fair I guess.

10 novembre - Caen - Samedi - Samedi semble être une journée tranquille à Caen. Habituellement, la rue sous ma fenêtre à l'hôtel est très animée mais aujourd'hui, presque personne n'a été en elle, mais certaines personnes debout dans une porte de fumer dans le froid. Comme ils ne peuvent pas fumer à l'intérieur, ils se démarquent dans le froid et la pluie et la fumée ....... Je pense que si je fumais je y renoncer avant que je le ferais.

Soit dit en passant, il pleuvait aujourd'hui. La première fois que j'ai quitté l'Angleterre qu'il a plu, c'était très agréable de ne pas avoir de la pluie presque tous les jours. Il est un peu froid mais, mais je peux composer avec cela.

J'avais pensé le téléphone que j'avais obtenu en Angleterre avec une carte d'O2 SIMS pourrait fonctionner ici, mais il ne fonctionne pas. Je considérais avoir une puce française à mettre dedans mais j'ai réalisé que même si j'ai appelé un hôtel ou tout ce qu'ils n'auraient probablement pas comprendre ou parler anglais, alors pourquoi gaspiller de l'argent sur une autre carte SIMS. Si j'ai besoin de parler à quelqu'un à la maison je peux le faire sur Skype gratuit de toute façon.

J'ai assez bien compris ce que j'ai fait Caen donc j'ai investi tout aujourd'hui faire ses devoirs sur Bayeux, les plages du débarquement et le Mont Saint-Michel, ainsi que l'étude du français. Comme il pleuvait, je n'ai vu aucun sens à aller de toute façon. Pour un peu, je pensais aller au magasin Monoprix quelques pâtés de maisons plus et avoir quelque chose pour le dîner mais à la fin je viens d'avoir mes céréales et une banane pour le petit déjeuner et juste corriger un peu de thon avec de la mayonnaise et le pain de grains entiers souper. Avec le thé, bien sûr. Le pain que je mange Complet mot à dire, alors je comprendre qu'il est à grains entiers de blé, bien que pas tout. Il fait si bon goût et est très copieux.

Quand je sors en tournée je prends quelques tranches dans un sac à sandwich, du fromage, des noix mélangées, une pomme, et ma barre de bonbons au chocolat noir. Lors d'une tournée j'ai l'habitude de grignoter sur un banc quelque part qui a une bonne vue. J'ai aussi apporter de l'eau en bouteille, mais je ne siroter elle au lieu d'avaler ce bas comme je le ferais au Texas. Des toilettes publiques sont parfois difficiles à trouver ici. Et il n'ya pas de fontaines d'eau n'importe où pour remplir la bouteille si je le vide.

Il est si calme ici. Sa nuit de samedi à 21:19 et le seul bruit que j'entends sont ceux que je fais sur ma frappe clavier. Difficile de croire que son samedi soir.

Je me suis souvenu que Google a un traducteur je pourrais utiliser pour traduire le français à l'anglais. Cela s'est révélé très utile lorsque je visite une page Web qui est en français (ce qui est presque tous d'entre eux), je peux copier et coller le texte dans l'interpréteur, puis le lire en anglais. Il est obtenu en cliquant sur le "plus" flèche sur la vue Google, même si j'ai remarqué que j'ai maintenant de cliquer sur "plus" puis "traduction", à traduire des choses. La France prend sur mon ordinateur peu à peu!

J'ai investi plusieurs heures aujourd'hui à travailler sur mon français et je pense que je vais investir plus de temps chaque jour à ce sujet. Ne connaissant pas la langue rend presque tout un défi. Et les Français ne semblent pas vraiment connaître un mot d'anglais. Même si je crois qu'ils font, mais préfère me paraître stupide d'essayer de parler français que les sembler stupide d'essayer de parler anglais. Après tout, c'est leur pays. Je sais que dans les Etats ne tente ou a de la sympathie pour ceux qui ne parlent pas anglais. Donc juste est juste, je suppose.
