Saturday - Kevin and I spent the early day looking for restaurants for dinner with our friends, Rob and Erica, arriving on Sunday. We looked at a couple that were listed in my book, but they were either too expensive or didn’t have a prix fixe menu or were closed on Sunday (which was mostly the case anyway.) In the meantime we had settled on lunch at a little bistro down a small street near the Odeon. The meal was wonderful and Kevin I both enjoyed it. For dessert I had an Ile Flottante, which seems to be back in favor as a dessert. They weren’t on any menus three years ago, and they are a favorite of mine. Imagine a huge lump of merangue baked slightly, then placed in a bowl of Crème Englaise (custard sauce) and topped with Caramel sauce and slivered almonds. Served cold. Heavenly.
After deciding to make reservations at the restaurant across the street from our no-longer-favorite-in-Paris restaurant, we went off to find an internet café. I won’t bore you with details, but I managed to put mine down in one of two places and spent the time until Sunday noon worrying about it.
Another Paris Restaurant
Wonderful tile work on either side of door.. Sunday we went off to the Flea Market and I picked up a couple of cute dresses from the same vendor I went to a couple of years ago (if you find a good thing, stick with it I always say!) We checked out the fabulous antiques, but I was depressed about my computer and no amount of retail therapy was going to help. So, off we went to the place where I WAS SURE I had left it, and yep-there it was….The feeling of relief was immense. You never realize how tied you are to one of these things until you don’t have it or access. We have been finding it very difficult, as internet cafes are few and far between and, whereas three years ago there was WiFi everywhere, someone has gotten wise….
Our friends arrived, though their train was late, and we got to the restaurant 40 minutes late. It was charming and full of ambiance, and the food was excellent, though I did feel a little rushed, probably because of our lateness. Pictures are attached, but starters were tomato aspic with cilantro and the boys had a chicken-pate like thing (why didn’t I write this
Coffee Break!
That's why I'm smiling... all down at the time???). All were enjoyed. Main courses were salmon, beef bourginon, and confit de canard (duck) all beautifully prepared and presented. For dessert I had - yep! - Ile Flottante, while the others had a crème caramel and a rice pudding with caramel, which Kevin said didn’t stack up to the rice pudding the other day. Overall, though, the meal was excellent, and may have (probably has) replaced Aux Petit Princes as our favorite here in Paris.
Names of restaurants will be listed at the end of the blogs when the trip is over…
MONDAY - I woke up with my inner-ear dizzy thing and stayed home laid up while the others went out. Well, why not? I have been here a week on vacation - it was time to wind down and get sick, don’t you think?
TUESDAY - Though not feeling 100%,I was good enough to make it back to the restaurant where we had the wonderful rice pudding. Lunch today consisted of the Chevre Chaud Salad again with the rice pudding for me.
We said our good-byes to Erica and Rob as they were heading to Bordeaux and we are off to Carcassonne in the morning. Dinner this evening was at Kevin’s swap in St Germain, Carinne, and her boyfriend. A wonderful, LIGHT, meal of Gaspacho, Salad Assiete and cheeses. She made a wonderful compote for dessert (not so light). Then Kevin and I bade our goodbyes and made that FINAL trek up the butte to the apartment.
I am sad to leave Paris. I didn’t get to as many restaurants as I wanted, and see as much as I wanted. I will return...
I have to tell you I am already totally confused. Picture for this entry were posted before, and so check back to the other pictures for reference....I apologize.....
