The bus window was covered in condensation from my small companions heavy breathing, 7 hours of playing ‘can you see the Eifel Tower’ yet had become slightly wearing! Woolly says – Well I hadn’t wanted to miss it! As our transfer whizzed us across the city I was still failing in my plight, Jo seemed to take pity on me eventually and promised that once we had put our stuff in the room then we would go and find it....result! I think I would have offered to bring it to him by this point in time! The accommodation wasn’t good and having been informed on arrival that the place had no hot water we weren’t in the best of spirits. Woolly says – I hadn’t noticed any ghosts in the room but then having sat quietly looking out of the window I hadn’t really checked. Not understanding the girls down cast faces at the lack of warm water I suggested we set off, I wasn’t sure if I liked the glint in Jo’s eye! I gave in, we might be grubby but at least it might stop him going on about the place if we sat him under it!
Woolly says – having navigated our way through the metro system I was first off the train and standing looking at the almighty tower long before the others arrived. The wrought iron lattice tower is named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower in 1889. It is the most-visited paid monument in the world and the tallest structure in Paris. It was even better in person. I’m going to like Paris, this is strangely mine and Zoe’s first trip here although Jo has been many times and classes it as one of her favourite cities. As I trotted down the steps and across the gardens I could barely wait to be able to touch it, I was thwarted in my quest as unless I went up it then I couldn’t get close enough, I looked at Jo and Zoe who appeared to be looking at menu’s hmmmm maybe my quest could wait for a few minutes! As we sat on the banks of the Seine eating rubbery omelettes we discussed the notion of going up to the heights, Woolly took it well when we decided that we hadn’t got the energy and sat quietly watching the river cruises pass us by.
Woolly says – I did not take it well and I wasn’t sitting quietly, I was sulking and they didn’t even notice. I considered stamping my paw and screaming but a little boy on the table next to us beat me to it. Wanting to stay relatively still I suggested we join one of the cruises and let the boat take the strain. Woolly says – it might not be as good the tower but better than nothing and having stepped over several people waiting in line I found the best seat possible for an hour on the river. The bridges and buildings on either side were lovely and as we cruised past the Museum d’Orsay on the left bank I was intrigued with the destinations marked on the outside of the former railway station including the famous Orient Express route. Swivelling my head to the right we floated past the impressive Louvre before being confronted with the wonders of Notre Dame, which reminded me that I needed to keep a careful eye out tomorrow for the hunchback! As our pleasant hour came to an end I looked mournfully up once more to the incredible structure and then at Jo, as if reading my mind she led us through the security gates and bag searches and into the base of the tower, yippeeeee were going up!
Peering upwards made me feel quite sick enough without trying to get up there but as it was getting dark I thought that my small friend might enjoy seeing it lit up at night, having bought him a snack to help him wait we sat on the grass watching the Parisians and tourists relaxing around the most iconic building in Paris. Woolly says – It seemed to take forever to get dark but eventually the light began to fade and the tower above me lit up to gasps from the audience, I happily grazed on my nuts contemplating what life would be like to live in this lovely city, I nearly choked on my pistachio’s as twinkly lights flickered across the structure, how much better can things get!
