Gypsies in another golf buggy CHCHCHCHCHCHCHCHCH
That’s the sound of my teeth chattering. Day 11 and with no end in sight to the cold snap we headed off to Chateau de Chambord. Once again our Aussie Sat Nav let us down again so we relied on the Merc’s French version (she also sounds a lot sexier). I honed my European driving skills by facing a truck head on down a tiny French alley. I find repeating the “F Word” over and over again really helps you get through some of those tight squeezes. I’ve noticed that my parents have also adopted the same practice.
Chambord is yet another home built by a King so he could go hunting (apparently the King only spent 42 days here all up!). The chateau is not as ornately decorated inside as Versailles or Fontainebleau, but it is still very impressive. It also has a moat which made Dad very happy. I’m a little disappointed that we only found one secret passage, however we were able to walk through it so I suppose that makes up for it. I lost Mum and Dad in it too for about 15 minutes so there’s another plus…
We then hightailed it
off to Cheverny, near Blois, an estate that has been in the same family for more than 6 centuries. The Marquis and Marquise de Vibraye still live there in the right wing on the second floor which is a little weird. I wouldn’t want thousands of people walking through my house (but that may have something to do with the undies all over my bedroom floor). Cheverny is a bit smaller than some of the other chateaux, however it is nicely decorated. Feels a bit weird going through one of the rooms and seeing the current residents’ family photos though.
While walking through the massive gardens we got bailed up by a woman with quite a large golf buggy. She offered to take us on a 30 minute tour of the park for 4 Euro so we all hopped on. We must have a look about us that attracts golf buggies, probably our fat guts. What we didn’t know was that the tour also took us on a boat trip which was quite good and unexpected. Not bad value for 4 Euro.
