The view through the restaurant roof in Rocamadour
Yesterday we visited Rocamadour which is about 50km from Sarlat. Rocamadour is one of those imposing French towns that you always see when watching the Tour de France on TV that are teetering on the edge of a cliff. For thousands of years the town has been a centre for Christian pilgrims thanks to the supposed miraculous powers of the black Madonna housed in one of the chapels.

When we were there the French Army we were doing a training exercise which was, well quite hot. We then had lunch hanging over the cliff, which was magnificent. Following lunch, a quick exploration of the town and a painstaking walk back up the hill, we then drove off to Chateau de Castelnau-Bretenoux, which according to the Lonely Planet, is one of the most impressive castes in France. Hmmm, not really….It’s impressive in terms of its medieval façade, however much of the internal part of the castle has been destroyed. It was also infested with bees and when I say infested, I mean thousands and thousands of bees. I did, however venture off the beaten track and discover one of the best secret passages ever. It was a staircase that led to

a tunnel that connected to a surrounded church. Took all of my will power not to go down there….

Today we left Sarlat after wandering through it’s maze of streets and gazing longingly at the produce available at the Wednesday market. If only we had an apartment to cook all of these foods up! We arrived in Le Mont Dore within 2.5 hrs which is a ski town and yes, there is still snow here. I warned Mum and Dad that we were heading for a snow town, however they did not believe me. As soon as we arrived Dad opened the boot and put on some pantaloons to cover his shorts. Mum remained in her three quarter pants and sandals while cursing the French.

We are in an 18th century castle which we have deemed quite new given our previous residence. We basically have apartments each which overlook the snow capped mountains. I’ve tried to take some photos but they don’t capture how close the mountains are to our hotel!

We are located right next to a casino which we thought we might just pop our heads in and have a look given that we have

nothing else to do here as much of the town is closed. OMG, we had to show our passports which were scanned!!!! Once we got in the casino it consisted of about 15 pokie machines!!! Hilarious. I was standing near the door before we left and was watching the security guard. He had the scanned image of my passport up for about 10 minutes so I’m a little scared that he’s stolen my identity and bought a chalet in the French Alps….
