Soap on a Stick!
This was the weirdest soap I've ever seen in my life - and seemingly unhygenic, I couldn't bring myself to touch it!! I’ve been in Strasbourg for a month now - an anniversary that I celebrated with next month’s rental payment. Ouch! And although after my first week it felt like I’d been here for a month, now that I’ve been here for a month it feels like it’s only been a week. Strange how time can mess with your mind!
I’ve been keeping very busy, although since I only do eight hours of uni a week and don’t work, I’m still trying to figure out how the time seems to be roaring past me so quickly. I think it may have something to do with the fact that we've been going out most nights! But because I’m not working there’s no need for me to get up early in the mornings, which means I’m getting plenty of sleep, taking plenty of time to eat a decent breakfast in the mornings, and stepping out my door everyday full of energy and ready to go!
I feel like I’ve been ‘sent away’ to some kind of far away health retreat I feel so relaxed! I have a two hour class four times a week, and the amount of homework given is ridiculously
Another night at Seven
After the no-talent night, we had to go out to make sure the night wasn't a total waste! small. I generally do whatever readings I need to do after breakfast when I'm wide awake and all coffee'd up. Also, there are a lot of sports on offer at uni for a really low flat fee for the year, so on Tuesdays and Thursdays I swim, on Tuesday afternoons I do Capoeira, and on Wednesday afternoons I do volleyball. So really, I'm doing the same amount of hours playing sport and exercising as I am in actual uni classes. Ah, the life!
But although I'm feeling very mentally relaxed, my liver doesn't like me too much at the moment. Lately it's just been party after party. At first we were going out only Fridays or Saturdays, but there's always a uni party on Thursday nights which is pretty much mandatory that you attend - they say it's the Strasbourg student night, and if it's mandatory then what choice to we have?
Actually, last week's night was incredibly lame. They're normally pretty good, just a night in one of the bars/clubs with cheaper drinks, but last Thursday it was the Soirée de Talent, a big talent night held at a hall. After about five acts we realised it
may as well have been called a no-talent night, and we had to leave because we were laughing at people and that's just mean. There were groups of people trying to dance who had absolutely no rhythm, pie eating contests, and a poor guy singing Brittney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time", out of tune, as a ballad, and on an acoustic guitar! And as if things couldn't get any funnier, when I stepped out of a toilet cubicle I found Laura on her knees, hanging on to a basin and crying with laughter at the big orange soaps stuck to a metal pole protruding from the wall. No words can really describe it!
And now another student night has started on Tuesdays, which is a whole lot of cheap drinking under the guise of "international student relations". Actually, it's going to be pretty funny because each week a different group of students from the same country hosts the evening, and we were tipsy enough last week to agree to hold an 'Australia Night' in the next few weeks, which will entail Aussie food, music and games so if you have any ideas please help us out!!
Laura's 38 hour birthday
This is how most our evenings start - us all sprawled around someone's apartment, using their bed for a lounge because noone has enough chairs! It was Laura's birthday on Sunday - Happy Birthday Laura!! Actually, she doesn't deserve another Happy Birthday wish because we've been celebrating her birthday for ever! It started Saturday night, we had drinks and headed out to Mezzanine of London (on the way there we did the Ab Fab bit - will explain later). Then on Sunday we went to the theatre, and that was awesome. I forget the name of the play, but it was really good. And I understood it!! Well, not every single word but enough to know what was going on, a very big improvement for me.
Actually, in 3 different conversations over the past week I've been told that my French is good, which makes me so happy!! But, although conversations are starting to flow a lot easier, there's still a lot of fogginess and HEAPS of vocabulary that I don't know. But I'm happy, it's only been a month and I've still got 11 to go!
Anyway, on to the Ab Fab story: We were walking to the club on Saturday night and as we crossed a bridge someone wanted to take a photo. Anyway, Kristian started talking about an Absolutely Fabulous
episode where Patsy was invited to Paris to attend some kind of model's reunion. They had to get this photo taken, and all the models were lined up against a bridge and were told to stand facing away from the camera, and then to all turn around at once and act natural to get a good shot. All the other models turned around and slumped naturally, heroin-chic style, while Patsy kept turning around each time with these ridiculously unnatural poses, feigning shock etc. So, for about 15 minutes we stood on the bridge turning around with a different Pasty-like pose for each picture. I'm not sure if it was one of those 'you had to be there moments', but they're still making me laugh!! (P.S. If pics are hard to see you can click on them to enlarge.)
