This is the beginning our 2
ndEuropean road trip. From an initial concept of driving to Norway North Cape, we soon realise that we can't easily reach Norway and as we have only 3 weeks for our trip we quickly adjust our goal and decide that Stockholm will be our goal. I’ve been to Sweden before (but a long time ago), but not to Stockholm. J hasn’t been to Sweden at all.
These days the only way to drive from the UK to Scandinavia is via a fairly limited number of north sea ferry routes, none of which are particularly convenient if Sweden if the destination. Spaces on the outbound ferries are in short supply in UK holiday season but we find a space on the Harwich-Hook of Holland crossing overnight on 13
th August.
It has been a few years since I've taken a car ferry. This one is large and very comfortable and I'm impressed by the cabin which is spacious and has an en-suite shower. We land at 8am local time (9am by the time we clear customs and immigration) and spend the rest of the day driving to just north of Hamburg.
The next morning we
have a good German breakfast, shop for essential supplies for a trip to Scandinavia (ie wine) and head for the Danish boarder.
Our first stop in Denmark is the town of Billund, one of the top Danish sights outside of Copenhagen as it is the home of Lego. I’m not so keen on Lego as to want to pay to visit the Lego World park, but the Lego House in the centre of town is free and well worth seeing.
From Billund it is another hour to Odense, the home to Hans Christian Anderson and the 3rd largest city in Denmark, where we stop to look around. Our overnight stop is self catering house in the country about 10km from Odense.
