Gabby the motorhome is parked up on the green grass in front of the castle we are visiting today . Gammel Estrup in Mid Jutland. The car park is packed and it seems as if everyone is taking advantage of the sunny weather and visiting this lovely castle . A castle with a museum so two for the price of one . Or rather two attractions and two prices . The name Det Gronne Museum was a bit of a misnomer. It was not green in any way shape or form . I expected something to do with ecology but once inside we found something rather different . Gabby the motorhome was still parked up on the grass outside this lovely castle /manor house. We had been over to the green museum and the garden and now it was time to see what was going on upstairs . The house as we looked at it was a red brick Renaissance manor house and an attractive one at that . Built in 1490 although excavations have revealed evidence of earlier constructions going back to 1340. We crossed the moat and entered the "front door ". The nobleman Lave Eskesen Brock who died in 1503 built the first moated fortress on the site . It was his grandson Eske Brock who rebuilt and modernised the manor . It has dawned not a bad sort of day in Northern Germany after a little drizzle overnight. It isn’t all dash across Germany and Denmark for us and although we haven’t got anything of historical importance to go off and take a look at, we have decided to take a bit of a detour off the A7 north this morning to mix up the scenery a bit. Our atlas has the D199 which travels east of Budelsdorf and then around the coast and back to the middle of this long finger of land to Flensburg the last German town before the border with Denmark marked as a scenic road.
