We arrived in the train station in Krakow to get the over night train to Prague looking forward to a peacful nights sleep and train journey! We thought of the money we were saving on a night in a hostel also and so all was well..Who KNEW that the next ten hours on this train would be the best ten hours of our entire trip to date.... We found our sleeper carriage(which was EVEN smaller then the one from Berlin, if that's even possilble to imagine) and introduced ourselves to the other two already there..as soon as we got a hello from them, we knew that they were Irish...and on both sides there were smiles in abundance...The couple were from Belfast and were delighted to finally meet some other irish, as were we...From down the corrider i heard a familiar accent shouting in terror at the sight of their carriage
LADS WE'LL NEVER FIT IN THERE
...immediately i recoginsed it as the Kerry accent i so longed to hear since leaving my room mates from home...By the time we left the station there was already a session going on in our carriage beds '71-76' full to the brim of irish bodies from every corner of our
OVER NIGHT TRAIN
It"ll take a lot to top that train ride..thats for sure,.,,,,what other trian ride have you ever been on that someone pulls out a tin whistle after 4 in the morning...ha ha,, home land...this was exactly what i needed at a time when i was so homesick for friends and family back home..by 11 we already had sweet talked the conducter into giving us crates of drink at one euro fifty a bottle...and by 6 the next morning there wasn't a wink of sleep to be had between us..instead the stories...the songs...and the laughter went on for hours...It was brilliant to swap tales of disasters and delight among people we felt like we knew already..It's true...whatever people say, there is this strange bond between Irish folk whenever their paths cross at any part of the globe...
Once we reached Prague and got off the trian, myself and James began to follow our directions to our hostel..Before long we realised we had about 12 other people following our very own footsteps...kerry lads, belfast folk, english blokes and even some guys from Australia..ha ha..I coudln't believe how organised we seemed in comparision..made us feel kinda happy with ourselves in an awfully strange way...before long we had managed to direct them all to our hostel, a handful managed to stay there and the rest worked their way from there...We all made plans to meet
Pub Crawl
Abraham, Brad and MYself feeling merry on our first night in prague... at the city pub crawl that night at 8 o clock..
After a few hours sleep in us then and a small bit to eat we returned to the hostel to meet the australian lads at the door on their way out to watch the game in the sqaure..we tagged along and before long we were watching the most bizzare band playing in the old town square waiting for the Czech game to begin..We later managed to make a pub crawl but not the same innitial one we had made plans to meet the others on..but i guess thats travelling for ya..plans can so easily change...And they can end up being the BEST nights ya have....so the last two nights have turned out to be ones to remember, thats for sure..
I was dissapointed with my spanking new camera that decided to turn on me once we reached Prague......Dissapointed but NOT suprised...i mean it's me right???bad luck seems to be following me around on this trip,.However i'm not so put down by it all now, after meeting this insane guy Abraham, who can really only be from the land of Mars, he has thought me that EVERYTHING HAPPENS
FOR A REASON...he really is living proof of that saying..He's missed stops and got off in wrong countries more then once and every time something goes horrifically wrong it always manages to turn round!!!He says the best times he's had was when such things happened that at first would almost bring you to tears...He's bumped into people randomly from other countries when this happened or even came across a random beer festival in a tiny village of Germany that was unknown to ANY travellers so it seemed...So ya....things really do have a way of working things out...and hey, if we hadn't been held back a few days in Berlin we wouldn't of been on that same train to Prague and never of experienced that one night i will hold on to for years to come...
The lads from Melbourne proved to be great characters to be around but unfortunately it was the first time we ever reallly had to let new friends go also..It wasn't long before we were going our seperate ways and continuing on with our travels...We spent the last day doing a walking tour of prague...It was LASHING RAIN all day but even still this didn't
Puppets..
They're so into puppets here, that our tour guide had a brother that STUDIED puppets in COLLEGE..crazy stuff... take from the city's beauty...The old town, new town, lesser town, jewish quarter, we saw it all that day...With a guide we really did get to see all the little places you'd normally forget about if going through the town by yourself...She told us the history to every minor detail here and by the end we had all this random informatiion on Architecture, War and just about all you can think of...It was nice..We saw the Palace , where we even managed to catch the changing of the guards..Ya know all the touristy stuff, the statues, the gardens, the streets, the astronomical clock...quite spectacular...
You think of prague and you think of...Drunken stag dues...Puppets...Ice Hockey....Beer...Soccer...Crystel...Skoda's...Classical Music....yes...A city that really has it all...
It was the first city that we really didn't feel right leaving..It was almost like we didn't have enough time here and weren't satisified that we had done or seen enough..But seeing as Vienna is our next stop and that was so hard to find accomadation with the euro 2008, staying just wasn't an option....But a succesful stay all the same...😊
