First of all I would like to say that Yuri made up the title!
Our Spanish may be broken but we can at least get our point across! NOT the case with our Czech! Luckily most people in Prague spoke English. Actually that has been the case everywhere we have been. When it comes to world travel, it is definitely handy to know English! We stayed in Prague for 3 nights and actually stayed in the SAME place for all three nights. I don’t think we had been in the same bed for that long since Kilimanjaro! We rented an apartment and it was wonderful. It had a full kitchen so we were able to make our own breakfast and dinner. This may not sound like much of a pleasure but it becomes one when eating out all of the time!
We got to know the Vietnamese grocery store on the corner VERY well as we were in there every single day buying new ingredients for our meals! They were quite obviously laughing at us by the third evening! However, one night on our way home from exploring we were looking for a closer supermarket. Yuri spotted a sign
that said “supermarket” but apparently didn’t see much else of the sign. See the picture for more……….!
On our first day we did a self-guided walking tour of the old section of Prague using our guide book. I will just say that it is MUCH better to follow someone than to try and figure it out ourselves! We really enjoyed Old Town Square and the old astronomical clock. Every hour is has a sequence that it goes through including a skeleton turning an hour glass upside down and the 12 apostles going around in a circle. I obviously don’t remember everything about the clock but hundreds of tourists gather every hour, on the hour, to see this little show happen! We also took a walk to the top of the clock tower and had a great view of the city!
While in Europe we have learned a lot about the game of rugby. The first lesson learned is that it is FAR more popular in the rest of the world than in the United States. I didn’t even know we had a rugby team to be honest with you. That was until they played Australia while we were
Cold Yuri
This is a view from the top of the clock tower in Prague in London and did not do very well! We got to hear about that one! The semi finals were happening while we were in Prague so we found them on our apartment TV. It wasn’t in English but we could still understand who was winning. However, I can’t say that I really understood what they were doing! At one point they pick each other up. Funny game to me!
We explored the Charles Bridge and Prague Castle on our second day there. We did a walking tour this time! We learned a lot but I have to say that I was a bit disappointed by the castle. I just didn’t think it was that castle-like! The St. Vitus Cathedral in the castle has been my favorite church though. It was just so stunning inside with TONS of stained glass. (remember your warning!) During the Spain blog I mentioned that we have learned a lot about Renaissance, Baroque and Gothic styles while touring these European cities. Well it finally got to Yuri. I will preface this story with the fact that there has been construction work on EVERY single church we have visited so far. So, as we were walking
down the side of the St. Vitus Cathedral, and there was construction happening on this one as well, Yuri says to me “Do you think they are always working on these churches because they are Baroque?” (: I have to admit that I laughed really hard. For those of you that know Frit…. this was a total Frit joke! Scary (:
Many people have asked us why we wanted to go to Prague. We’ve always said that it was because we heard it was a beautiful city but the real reason is that Yuri once read that the Museum of Torture there is one of the top museums in the world. I would like to meet the person that wrote that article! I agreed to go because he wanted to so badly but I can’t for the life of me figure out why you would want to see those terrible, terrible instruments. Must be a guy thing! There were some real wackos back then that created these unspeakable machines. I just couldn’t believe some of the things they did to people! One of the least offensive was a mask that they made “unruly or disobedient” women wear in the
public square! You can probably guess what is coming next………….Yes Yuri said that I would always be in the square with the mask on!
We had locked ourselves in our apartment for the first two nights so figured we should at least act young and go out on the town for the last night! Argentina was playing South Africa in the semi finals of the rugby world cup so we thought we could find a bar with that on. We ended up at a freaking English pub in Prague! It was filled with drunken English dudes rooting for South Africa to win because they wanted to play them in the finals. Not what I would call a real Prague night life experience but we had a good time. That was until we had to hear “Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home………” for the 40th time! That’s when we checked out! Before leaving Prague the following morning we thought we should try some traditional Czech food! For Yuri that meant a GIANT hot dog (not really but that is what it looked like) and a piece of friend cheese for me! Mmmm mmm good!
After
Prague we headed to this great little town called Czesky Krumlov. It was recommended to us by a friend that had been there. Now that is what I call a castle! It was built into the side of a hill and had bears living in the moat! They actually used them as protection back in the day but now they are there for the tourists to see! Compared to a lot of zoos I have been to, those bears had a pretty cool house! We took a tour of the castle and had the most stoic, serious tour guide I have ever met! Her lack of enthusiasm was almost funny. Luckily two British ladies were there to add the humor for us! The four of us were looking at a statue of a dog-like creature that has breasts and a female human’s face. All of a sudden one of the women says “Now that truly is man’s best friend”!
