Old Town
Just steps from my hotel. The weather in Prague is perfect for November Wow, slept through the night and woke up at 8:30AM to glorious sunshine. We walked to the Palladium (a shopping mall of 200 stores) to have a cup of coffee and free WiFi at Starbucks. I wouldn't normally go to Starbucks in Europe as I love European coffee shops (stay tuned for a story about that), but I feel the need to check my business emails and Travel Blog. All is well at home, so we head to the Billa grocery store 1 minute from the hotel for a deli lunch and bottled water. You have to be really careful of the pricing in Prague. You can eat very economically or be totally ripped off, which I think is true of most cities in the world. I bought a prepared Greek salad for $1.50, bbq chicken breast $1.50, 1.5L bottled water $.25, and a bun for $.5 total $3.30 EXCELLENT value, thank you very much!
The skies are clear with the temperature around 12C, slight wind and Prague is looking gorgeous. Some of the businesses are starting to decorate for Christmas and people are just generally looking really happy. I mean
who wouldn't be happy seeing all the beautiful people, and the women decked out in their knee high boots. I knew that boots were hot this year but, when you see someone 60 wearing them it just doesn't look right. We hit Wenceslas square and ducked into a few shops along the way to check out prices......the clothing prices are now higher than Vancouver. Something that bothers me is when tourists get treated like we are stupid. I am sure there are many who set the tone of the stupid tourist but, I don't like it when I am treated that way. I had to re-supply a product that I especially love from Marks & Spencer, and it was on sale 20% off (yeah for me), so I take it to the cashier to pay and she smells a tourist! She scans the product and points to the price on the little screen 128CZ(the regular price).......I say to her this is 20% off, with great effort she grudgingly pushes a button and re-points to the screen 103CZ. Now this was only a savings of $1.50C, but that is not the point......don't fall into the gotta trap! Now laugh loud and
hard at the next story!!!!!
House of Thievery a.k.a. The Trinity Coffee Shop I saw a beautiful little coffee shop on Wenceslas Square, with outdoor tables and chairs, all decorated for Christmas. It looked like the perfect location to people watch. We walked into the Trinity Coffee Shop - a really nice place, greeted by a very friendly gentleman, and fell into the trap that one should NEVER do in life, ANYWHERE in the world. Order without looking at the menu or prices!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I asked for a large cappuccino (this is a great day go big) and my girlfriend orders the same AND apple strudel. We sit back and relax AND THEN Carol opens the menu. I am looking across the table at the menu upside down and we both just about had to call 911. Our coffee was going to be $13.00C. No, this was not a bucket of coffee, it could be compared to a Grande at Starbucks (and made Starbucks look like the local dollar store). Okay, laugh your head off.......I know, I know I just wrote about the stupid tourist! It gets worse, Carol's Apple strudel was $12C.
My husband, would have been
House of Thievery
a.k.a. Trinity Coffee Shop really annoyed with me for complaining about the price. If he was here, and I wish he was, he would say you are in a gorgeous city, in a lovely coffee shop enjoying what was a really good cup of coffee, what's the big deal? O.K. darling, cover my Visa when I get home?
Stay tuned, tomorrow I have booked a half day city tour........loved the girl who sold me the ticket 20% off for being a travel agent. She probably gives that to anyone who asks - :O) stupid tourist.
