• 7-6 Bled - Zagreb
That morning I finally got to enjoy Lake Bled with all of its intended beauty. The sun was finally out, the mountains were still snow capped, the lake and all its surroundings where all at there peak. The only thing missing was an attractive female and a picnic basket…
Well leaving bled moments after my daydream and off to Zagreb, Croatia. Unfortunately trains decided to be late. Oh well, there was some good graffiti around. However I almost did make the decision to take a much longer train ride and become completely off track by going to Budapest with a bunch of British chicas, but decided against it. The train wasn’t very full after an hour or two and I got the pleasure of have my own room and took a nap, awaking to a young British couple that entertained me the rest of the ride. The guy fell asleep and I thought the girl was hitting on me, but I let it go haha… pernicious ladies. Well we parted ways, only to meet back up with them and ended up sharing a room with them in a hotel that night. As
for the city, it’s ok. I think this is another place that couples would enjoy, it’s not too big, and has a lot of “cute” places to eat and drink. For some reason I wrote “chicks dude… chicks” in my book, I am thinking I was making a Dane Cook reference to the ridiculously hot chicks that are in Croatia. Either way I had a 650AM train to Split and I was dead tired, so I called it a early night.
• 7-7 Split
Wooof’ That was a long train ride from Zagreb to Split… it kind of reminded me of that 45 hour trip from Madrid to San Sebastian. Unlike that trip when I had the company of a pretty lady by the name Camille, this time I had the company of a blind guy, an old guy and a hot girl that didn’t speak English. So, I spent the 5-6 hours staring out the window hoping someone would talk to me.
Well arriving in Split was a relief, but I was immediately bombarded by elderly Croatians trying to sell me there extra rooms. I was aware of this and was planning on finding
a place to stay this way, but I didn’t expect so many. I basically got picked by a couple people and chose a man named Marco. He was nice, spoke ten languages, but no English or Spanish, go figure. He claimed to speak Italian, but that communication barrier stood strong. Well he did understand $$ and I was able to talk him down a bit, but still paid 15 Euros. We walked for about ten minutes, road a bus for about ten minutes, and then walked for about five more… a last we arrived at 42 Miaccous Rekac and he showed me my room and explained to me how to get back.
Split… lets take a walk. I was a basically out of the “city”, but still on the coast and still within site of it, so I walked the coastline the actual downtown area. I watched kids jump of rocks into rocky water, that looked dangerous, but I wanted to join them. First things first though, check the ferry schedule to Hvar!! After a delay I found it and got one for the next afternoon. The Palace of Diocletian was actually pretty cool. It’s not advertised like
anything special, but its basically just old houses (where people still live), a flea market, and a bell tower. There is more to it, but it’s a Palace, so there were the obvious quarters as well. The old town (Stari grad) in the palace is weird because it’s filled with tourist and people just hanging out. The Bell Tower of St. Dominus is well worth the Kuna to get to the top and see the city and beautiful water. It is an interesting walk to the top though. I was directly behind a bigger couple and they were struggling to step up each step because of the actual size of the step. Then it leads into this random metal staircase, which seems very out of place before you arrive at the top for your great 360 degree view.
The sun was on its way down, so I headed back towards the “hotel”. I passed by that same area on the beach again, expecting to find some people my age and perhaps finding some people to go out with… but nothing. Everyone seemed to be ten or sixty.
Note: Croatia does not have shower curtains thus far and
Odd statue
Central/ Eastern/ Previous Soviet satellite states have odd statues also have lumpy beds. Second place I have been to that had both things. Better luck next time.
Hvar in the morning!!
