Dubrovnik
Such a beautiful town. As my nephew Dylan would say, I'm at the place of "my people". We landed in Dubrovnik around 2pm. I was busy trying to catch up on my journal writing so I missed the landing but Alistair said it was the most amazing landing he'd ever seen.
I should catch up on Vienna first though...
Yesterday was FREEZING cold in Vienna. When the heavy wind would kick in (which was often) it was hard to walk and was quite horrible. In the morning I told the guys my only definate must do was to go to the house of Mozart. It was pretty cool. The audioplayer was in English and each room's message would play for so long that we'd end up sitting on a bench to finish listening to it. It started on the 4th floor and worked it's way down. On the 1st floor where it ended we saw the place where Mozart lived when he wrote the Marriage of Figaro. They're not sure what each room was used for but they made educated guesses and had one item in each room that came from the same time Mozart lived there. The last room (which they assumed was his
Marko
This is Marko. If you get off a bus in Dubrovnik and see him ask him for a room. His place is in a great location for a great price and he's very accommodating . Everyone in town loves him. bedroom) was beautiful. After the museum we debated what we should do next but the weather was so horrible that sightseeing didn't seem like much fun. We decided to go shopping instead. I headed into 1 of the 20 H&M stores in the main strip where we were. It was similar to 3rd Street Promenade. I bought a cheap outfit to wear to the Mozart & Strauss concert we were going to that night. That show was pretty cool but right before the musicians took the stage a man with the most gianormous noggin I'd ever seen sat right in front of me completely blocking my view. The first half of the show was selected works of Mozart from The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute and Don Giovanni. The second half was Strauss. The only work of his I know by name was The Blue Danube (I'm so cultured 😉 The musicians and conductor were in suits but the opera singers and ballet dancers (2 of each) wore costumes. The show would have been great if it was stadium seating but it was just a small room with chairs lined up directly behind each other. Oh well. We had
Our Apartment
That's me pointing to our Apartment in Dubrovnik. I couldn't get over how close we were to the water. a coffee before heading back to Hotel Papageno where I watched dubbed Simpsons before going to bed.
This morning we took a cab to the airport and I left my Mucha posters in the cab 😞 I'm talking to Hotel Papageno trying to get them back but I'm not holding my breath...
Dubrovnik is beautiful. I was so excited on the bus as we approached the city. We were worried about finding a place to say, but just as I had read on travel sites, there were a group of people waiting for us to get off the bus. The first man who approached us (Marko) was very nice and spoke English very well. He told us his place was very close and told us the distance in meters (which was no help to us). We took a chance and followed him to the apartment. We are staying RIGHT by the water. I'm closer to the water than I was in Venice Beach. Less than a block. It's insane. The apartment we're staying in is 2 levels. The boys are upstairs and I'm down stairs on the sleeper couch. The toilet paper in the apartment is peach scented. The place
Alistair's Editing Station
We ran out of money during our trip. Luckily, there was a fully functional editing station in our apartment in Dubrovnik. is nice & you can't beat the location.
We left to walk around town and it started to rain, but unlike Vienna the rain isn't bad. It's about 10 degrees warmer here and the rain isn't very cold. We ate at the place Marko suggested and had one of the Croatian delicacies-Fried Squid. Prices here are reasonable. Much less than Vienna but not as big of a bargain as Czech Republic. Soda is still expensive so I'm down to about 1 coke a day (if you can believe that). I also had the local dessert which was basically Flan- very delicious. The waiter and his friends got a good laugh at us when we asked for Draft beer. He didn't speak much English so we pretended to pour a beer from a spout. He laughed and asked "big or small"? The boys (I wasn't drinking beer) said "BIG!" and he laughed again. Us silly Americans and our excess. He walked to his friends and told them something. They all looked over at us and started laughing.
The people here are much more friendly and speak more English than in Prague but pedestrians are still honked at and run over.
I'm about to time out on this computer so I'll say goodbye for now...
