mini Ljubljana
last look around Slovenia July 19th: It's appropriate really, I ranted about inconsiderate people in hostels in my Nuremberg entry that I was typing out last night, and just as I was wrapping it up all these peple would come back from town 'whoopin' and hollerin' and as I happened to be up at the time (and know how annoying it can be to be woken up by drunk people) I reminded them that people were asleep just in the next room, they kind of gave an "oh crap, sorry" sort of response and quietened down, but within seconds they were bawling at each other again... And then it becomes pointless saying anything because they either repeat the process or they act all "geez, you've already told us to be quiet" as if they now have immunity from such things! I guess with my holiday, when it's over I will miss travelling and going to amazing places and meeting cool people etc etc but going back to a nice quiet house doesn't sound so bad.
Anyway, on to today: Two or three hours to kill before the train to Zagreb, having coffee and cake (hmmm cake) then I might try and find
Welcome to Zagreb
the view from the train station entrance a music store that I saw while I was on my way to the zoo yesterday. It's that annoying thing that trying to purposely find a place that you've accidentally stumbled on never seems particularly easy.
Wow this really is a fly-heavy market place.... really gives you the impression that everything is so clean and disease-free.
Currently reading Bill Bryson's "Notes
From A Small Island", kind of nice to read about someone else's travels while you're at it yourself. I've never read anything by Bryson either so it feels like a good starting point... Actually that's been a definite, good side effect of the trip; my love of reading has been rekindled... well not so much that didn't love reading, I guess it's more that I usually just don't make the time. In an average work week I read during bus rides (but then sometimes I talk to the driver, so no reading) I read during my breaks at work but then those are often interrupted by the tracer/pager going off. Apart from that I occasionally recklessly sit down on my days off with a CD, a cup of tea and a book but that's pretty rare as I usually

simple but mesmerising have other things that need doing. So it's been great having so much time to read, to be able to finish books in the same week I started them again is great!
The train to Zagreb was interesting; so many people piled on that it got to the point that some had to be given pillows and sit on the floor... which was odd considering they had an extra carriage connected to ours that they didn't open at all for the entire trip!
Lots more lovely scenery; it's like some weird yet beautiful conglomeration of Glenorchy and Trotters Gorge. Thrilled too that we got stopped on both sides of the border and had our passports stamped! That is one thing that always seems like a letdown with train travel in Europe, a lack of souvenir passport stamps... that's the only letdown though, other than that I love that there is such awesome train system here that you can really just rock up to a train station and head off almost anywhere you want!

Zagreb is hot and sunny, it doesn't look too big, the skyscrapers aren't too dauntingly high & numerous. Got to my room and met my roommate; a Chinese guy who seems to make "fuck" a word that belongs in between every other word. When we came in I thought we'd woken him up and pissed him off because he was like "fuck" but then he followed it up with "fuck, how are you doing man? fuck"
Some of his friends from Sweden checked in next and it seems that a fondness for the 'f-word' is something that they all share.
Went out for food (good) and a meander, ended up sitting staring at this cool fountain and just soaking in the evening atmosphere for a while.
Came back and got nicely drunk while chatting to Americans, a Brit, an Aussie and people who run the hostel... a good night all in all!
