Bulgaria has some great hikes We enjoy hiking and when we travel we try to find good hikes when possible. We found a few on this trip and we would now like to tell you a bit about them. We are Emma Holmbro and Ake Dahllof. We live in Stockholm, Sweden. We have travelled more or less regularly since the mid 1990-ies and it seems like the more we travel the more difficult it is to decide where to go next. Seven Rila Lakes Hikes

We met this frog on the Seven Lakes Hike. Other than this there were very few animals on the trails

The trail was most of the way in very good condition. Typically it looked like what you see in this picture

Allow yourself time for the hike. Don't rush through it. The views are worth enjoying

After we had seen Rila Monastery we did a small hike from a resort area nearby

The trail went from the resort area up a forested slope and into an open valley

Musala Peak Hike

This is the beginning of the Musala Peak Trail. Here the trail is like a paved road. It gets steeper later on

There are a few lakes along this hike too.

Don't even think about swimming in the glacial lakes. It is not permitted to start with and it would not be pleasant either because the water is cold

This hike is slightly harder than the Seven Rila Lakes Hike but again most people can do it. We saw kids not more than 10 years and men and women who might have been in their 70-ies who did it. So if you are able to walk a few kilometers without taking a break you can do this hike as long as you allow yourself time.

The nature and the views were not as great on this hike as on the Seven Rila Lakes Hike. The nature was rougher probably due to the slightly higher altitude

Musala Peak is at 2,925 meters the highest peak in the Balkan Peninsula

Summer
Most people would prefer summer for hikes especially for the high altitude ones. In winter it snows in Bulgaria and above 2,000 meters it might be very difficult to hike in winter if at all possible. At lower altitude it might get very warm in summer so spring or fall might be just as good or even better. /Ake

Yes, a rest stop or an overnight stop
It would not be a bad place to stay overnight either. But I believe most people just stay for a rest or to eat some food. /Ake

It was an unexpected oasis
We went there to see the bridge but ended up find not only that but also an oasis. We stayed there much longer than planned and loved it. /Ake
