Mon 18th.
route to Georgie and meta via Lizard house track The 17th of the month i headed to swop my car for the white one. It wasn't too bad on the way out but then G said to come back via V.Dol.This proved ok but slightly tricky near the end as the snow had begun to fall. The idea was to get the car serviced ,an MOT and taxed as I had insured it the previous week. What a mistake as the snow continued to fall unceasingly until Wednesday. There was no way I was getting out of the village, nor anyway lorries with supplies were getting in!! However by Mon(1st) there was a small window of opourtunity as the weather had been mildly kind towards the weekend. The car got a service, it's MOT ,I got supplies and then returned to Boyana.Having used the motorway back again I then encountered rain nearing Devnya ,which turned to rain and snow after Suvorovo and to snow(wet) from the next village to home.An interesting jouney was the best way to describe the return home.
However i parked up and made my way up to G+M as usual for tea.I couldn't believe how much had fallen in the short time there ,but whereas on the way up it
Lizard house kitchen window!
unfortunately window did not get replaced yet.New window now on hold for better weather was up to my calfs, by the return it was higher again. As usual next morning I went to go to M+G to feed their cats and dog(Scruffy) ,plus get my morning coffee and was knackered just in getting half way with the deep snow(not drifts) they were deeper again! The Lizard house had to be breached through thigh high snow to access the pet's foodstuffs which I then transferred to the outside freezer at G+M so they could feed the animals on Weds as I could not face another walk that morning. That evening(Tues) i entered the lizard house to find, with no use ,the taps etc had frozen and the sink had pushed its eweneck into the basin.A layer of snow had also settled on the work serface in the kitchen where the glass was loose. It actually was only being used as a washing machine outlet as it was too cold for G+M to use the shower. So no lizard house.
OK.That Wednesday(3rd) proved to be without snow and I managed to forge a small path to the gate round the car which helped slightly in the journey to tea. Thurs also had no snow and actually quite a lot
gas anyone?
tUES 19TH jAN.DOWNSTAIRS PORCH! of wintry sunshine which ,though pleasant ,was not enough to do much good. However when Friday was also clear, if overcast, I decided to forge ahead and try to clear from the car to the gate and out to the road.2 hours later(i was acclimatised to digging) I got it clear.maybe now I could get out tomorrow to replenish supplies?! very funny.Saturday it continued to snow heavily (from Friday night until the early hours of Sunday 7th.)All my work was obliterated and so the proijected idea of swopping cars proved hairy. However i duely returned from swopping cars in the jeep hoping to get tyres on it at the back on the 8th.No way and it was actually to be on the 10th that i struggled to get it to Varna with G as escort urgbing me on.i have to admit that having barely managed to clear the village when I saw the 3+ metre drifts ploughed either side of the road to Gen. Kiselo I very nearly turned back.2 things stopped me - one i had got that far how bad could it get and 2 turning round was even more of a frightening idea,so we set off.Luckily we met
no vehicles at the start of the
road and where it narrowed to 1.5 car widths they had carved a small funkhole.Seeing a large lorry approaching i pulled into it and waited.Trying to get going again with 2 virtually bald back tyres was hair-raising but with luck i made it down to Gen.Kiselo village with no other vehicles to obstruct me.
Next step up the steep hill out of the village towards V.Dol.I was able to get a run at it and had room to maintain momentum and pass a car and lorry coming down.Neither bothered to wait for me,which they were supposed to do, so it was very much a question of luck to get a free road space as 'pacing it 'was out of the question. Eventually I got to the road from Suvorovo to Devnya (and the motorway) which was pretty clear, though flanked still by high drifts and sometimes barely more than a car's width. With 2 replacement winter tyres I felt a little happier and eventually arrived home.Today(12th) was the next day I emerged after 2 days good weather, and a lot of melting going on.Now there seems to be a period of slightly higher temps
and rain with intermittent sun for the next few days.14 th is to be sunny (we hope).family celebration in planning. Added to everything yesterday the electric to the whole village(including such street lamps that work) was off (from midnight Weds) to 5.30 pm Thurs. i planned to sleep upstairs with the plants and animals using the litle bit of calor backup (carried down from the lizard house )by Georgie that morning.Though the electric came back on I followed through and this am put back the divan to a divan but the plants remain in the room with us as they were in their own room which required more heating.Sun has been shining today (as predicted) so hopefully we are in a slightly better spell if expected frosts due each night. On Monday I hope to go to Varna to pay car and house installment payments, via a visit to G's neice and maybe new granddaughter in Sindel(No.22!!) So as usual it's all go! During the course of the weather i have taken 9 falls most of which involved bottom hitting the ground fiirst or in a couple of cases knees and elbows. However the last 2 occurred within 2 mins of
each other and involved sludgy snow on way to the car to get my golf brolly..The upper spinal reaches proved a problem until the next day when gentle rotation of the neck caused a couple of 'clicks'.At that point things eased somewhat but it proved to be a wake-up call for me as it could have been much worse. However i am still here, hopefully wiser, and looking forward to a break in conditions. It's hard to believe now that one of my main reasons originally for choosing Bulgaria was snow in Winter!! I never thought to hear myself say thank god no snow for a while. So that's a brief update and rearly does no justice to the myriad thoughts and feelings I lived through.More anon.Love supergran
P.S. As usual it has taken so long to upload photos from my machine that a Happy Valentine's day seems appropriate to everyone.!!
