We used a route we had not been on before to travel south. From Bergues we took free motorways past Lille, Namur, Luxembourg, Metz and Nancy and stayed the night at a campsite in a pretty location in the village of St-Maurice in the Vosges Mountains.

The route went very close to Mons in Belgium and we detoured to visit the combined British and German St Symphorien Military Cemetery. This holds the graves of those killed in the first battle of the 1914 -18 war and had recently been the site of a ceremony marking the start of the war. It turned out to be a beautiful spot.
