Hello Everyone once again!
I just got back two days ago from my trip to the region with the most history in France!
The day after i got back from my trip to spain my fourth host family (Laurent, Danielle, and Julie) picked me up to sleep over at their house for the night.
At three oclock in the morning we all woke up to start our 8 hour drive to La Dordogne(a region in the south) of France. I slept must of the way in the car.
We got to where we were staying in the afternoon. It was a big old cottage house that was divided into rooms each with a little kitchen and bathroom. It was really cute and the countryside around it was picturesque. Then during the afternoon we went to the nearby town to take a look around. All the towns in that region are really really old-havnt changed really since theyve been build.
During the next couple days we did a lot of day trips.
-I saw Lascaux 2-an almost exact replica of the most famous cave in the world. Its filled with panitings that caveman painted 17,000 years ago. They decorated it
Pick-a-boo!
Me in one of the ruins of an old village that was bulit in to the rocks was the animals of the time as well as some weird symbols. It was really amazing. They had to build a replica because all the CO2 that vistors were giving off made the paintings fade so they decided to build an other too save the paintings and at the same time for the public to be able to see them.
-Rocamadous: a city that is build partly into the rock-there are a couple in this region and some very very old. The rock keeps the house at the same warm temperature during the year as well as providing protection from raids back then.
-a boat ride-i learned about the region alot from the speaker as well as the history of the castles we passed during the hour
-La Dordogne has the biggest number of castles in the world per hector-1250. and i maybe saw 20 of those.
-A saw a glass blower-that was really cool
And also a ate pretty mutch all the specialties of the region. There are a lot of them....
including: foi gras-its like the pate but more expensive and made out of a part of a duck-really good but really fatty
tarte des noix-basically
a pie made out of nuts
confetti de canard: duck with potatoes, legumes and a sauce of foi gras
fromage de chevre-Cabecou: goat cheese of the region
Anyways the food was really really good-ate the most ive ever eaten in my life.
Every evening for supper was pretty mutch like theis...
:We sarted with a Imparitif-which is wine with chips and chesses and stuff like that
then we went to a resto
you start with an appitizer-foi gras or somthing like that
than main plat-duck or other meats like that-fish too somtimes
than desert
Anyways my stomach is about to explode by the time we finish.
So as you can see i did not lose wight during my trip at all.
So yeah La Dordogne is a beautiful region in France and if you like history and want to eat like a king go there!
Friday we packed or things to continue on to the second part of our trip. La Loire!!!
It took five hours to get there but its on the way back to belgium so coming back home sunday was only 4 hours or so.
The place we stayed at is surounded
by a national park filled with animals-Its called Chambourd and is named after the beautiful castle that is just behind the parc. this catsle was made for King Francois 1 who wanted a magnificent place to stay when he wanted to go hunting. Anways, we stopped at a few places where you can try to see if you can catch the sight of the animals from a vantage point. We had a really good chance that in one of them we saw a heard of deer just 100 metres or so away. Really cool. Also, during the trip we saw- wild boar, big horn sheep, and a dead badger on the side of the road(never saw one of those in my life)
During the two days we were there we visited
Amboise: whitch was the old castle of the kings of france
Chenonceaux: A very beutiful castle that is build over a river. All the rooms inside all still have their old furniture materails that they really used back then. Outside the gardens are really big and semetric like all french gardens.
Chambord: was my favorite castle, The achiticure is amazing-with more than 100 towers at the top,
a staircase that was made by leonardo himself!
And we also went to a wine tasting-Best wine i ever tasted called 'le Paridis 2003' we also got to have a tour of the caves. It was really cool the guy explained evrything. They use huge metal devises to hold their wine-they apparently dont like the woody taste that wooden barrels make. I saw the oldest wine that ive seen in my life in that cave-more than 100 years old-you would have to sell your house to buy it im pretty sure, lol.
Anyways it was a great trip, and i never will forget it. Danielle and Laurent were really generous to invite me and we ended up having a lot of fun together descovering france. Julie is a really nice girl too...during the trip she ended up meeting a server in our second hotel-they were realy cute -each turning red when ever they saw the other-me and danielle and laurent got a good laugh out of that, lol
See you guys in a little more than 2 months!
Love becca
